Campaign-focused game with Ranger, but keep the advanced movement systems so you can zoom around the levels. I'd also say include a multiplayer that's straightforward, but they wouldnt want to divert attention from QC.

2. start with a usable weapon, or make it where players are always at an even DM
3. focus on teamplay
Make like Q1 i.e. occult dark castles and shit, make it more melee focused but crossbow that shoots nails, magic ranged attacks, and bombs are okay.
Sonic Mayhem/Frontline Assembly made better Quake soundtracks than NIN.
Quake was just a worse Doom even when it was new. Not worth digging back up today.

Masters of Doom stated Quake was based on nothing because Romero was dicking about reason why Quake 2 is no one's favorite FPS and why Carmack decided Quake 3 would be an MP game.
Doom 2016 and Eternal are literally what a successful quake game with fast gameplay would be like because but I take no one on Yas Forums played Doom 2016 multiplayer or Quake Champions for that matter.
You could also play resistance fall of man instead, it is a better Quake 2 / Half -life game plot wise and there is a lot of TECHNOLOGY involved in those games.
2 was supposed to be something else entirely, but they slapped Quake nametag onto it so it would sell.

I mean Tom Hall was the only guy at Id with a vague idea on how to elaborate design documents, I think they axed him too early, I still think it sucks he was not credited on Doom, I mean I understand. One of my favorite maps on Doom 2 was based on a Tom Hall level and Dopefish keeps appearing in plenty of other games to this day.

Quake 4 was the Doom 3 of Quake, except instead of amazing lightning enginge, it had the stroggification cutscene as it's saving grace.
I still find the Tom Hall story depressingly funny. Carmack brothers and Romero have this badass idea for a DnD campaign in an FPS setting butchering demons with zero fucks to give about the plot.

The concept was John's, he can't, the whole eldritch Lovecraftian thing in Quake was entirely his, with him gone they went back to their Metallica/Megadeth demon thing and dipped gently into Mad Max Biker Boy Thong Chaps with RAGE.
Fun story John gave me a key after I returned RAGE due to shit optimization on AMD, he had fixed it and saw me bitch on a site and emailed me, so I got to finish it.

Ha no, one team was working on basically Doom 3 and another on something like Strife and the result was Quake and the plot was really elaborated as an excuse as to why the two were connected, there are really just TWO boss fights in the entire game and Shub-Niggurath was never mentioned again reason why Quake 2 is about LOL ALIENS.
It was a miracle Quake was completed at all, it was practically made by a skeleton crew on crunch mode. Quake was the reason Carmack had it with Romero.
The irony is that Romero produced Hexen, and Hexen II is what a successful Daikatana would had been like.

nowadays the rpg thing is just trivia, it was a concept. we don't know what it would have been like and so even if that gets made no one can really say it's the game we never got, it's like trying to remake something that wasn't made in the first place. if only we could see where that path might have lead us though, it would be amazing to see even though quake 1 turned out so well

Unironically just optimize Champions' performance and netcode and at least let the players who bought the game host their own servers because it would be a really good game without those issues.

Quake 4 was unironically the best game in the series. Want to know why? Because they got rid of glitch hopping, which is the FPS equivalent of the wavedashing cancer in Melee.

He succeeded on the back of a talented team to be sure, he created a fantastic game with a fully Lovecraftian theme throughout, something no one at id related to.
We won't see a Quake sequel for this reason.

Romero's idea was Lovecraftian, there was a serious struggle over that element and it lead to a lot of tortured scenarios fleshed out by a small crew. They succeeded, somehow, but a lot of the RPG elements and expanded horror story were cut, idsoftware don't play that shit until, you know, 2016.
Tom Hall is like Weird Al Yankovic and has his style but it is not very mainstream and the Id guys were edgy as fuck. John Carmack porn quote was not something that should be taken literally because the context was that Tom Hall was trying to impress Carmack and tried very hard to find his place in the new Id. If he had simply dicked around with the engine like Carmack wanted, he would had remained at Id but he was terrified of Carmack and tried to go on about all this military documents and sci-fy story for the game which eventually was worked into Doom 3, 2016 and Eternal.
I mean really, just read the Doom Bible and then start a new game in Doom 3.
Rise of the Triad shows that he had some really good ideas but at the end, much like Romero, he was not a proficient whiz kid like Carmack and thus their inability to code and implement doomed them, much like how Id eventually lost against the technology fight against Valve (Hl2 vs Doom 3) not to mention story driven games like SS2, Deus Ex and HL were much more compelling. Deus EX is fucking ugly and it is still fucking great.
But without Tom Hall neither Wolf 3D nor Doom would have had secrets and exploration is one of my favorite things to do in both games.
