It's from a side story written by Yoko called Red and Black. It's about the struggle Nier has finding a job. It's only canon for brother Nier though, since Papa Nier doesn't fit with it.

I much prefer father Nier but I understand that the game's story/events don't really fit the character. Prime example is that scene when Kaine wakes up from being petrified and looks surprised how much he grew and how much of an adult he became. Doesn't work with papa Nier at all.
