This is the first time I post this.

its just a hyper-realistic expansion pack for half life 1, as far as I see it.
Half life is the best game in the series, and everything else is just a standalone expansion for the base game.
Half life 2 as a gamestory is worse than opposing force, but better than blue shift. Half-life could have been a super serious series and continued along the path of the original's dark tone - but after gearbox made weird shit like the fat guard in the hl1 expansions, valve followed along the same path and decided to just retcon a bunch of goofy characters in loosely based on original characters - or 1 of the same copy of many people (barney is now one person).
The technology is nice though, and it made sense for the game to show if off at the time even though its super cringe now to see a game bragging about its physics by putting heaps of explosive barrels and movable props in your face.

As far as gameplay goes, its 10/10 on hard difficulty (normal is way too easy)
but if you include story, setting and level design, its 6/10 at best.

there isn't much difference between hl1 and hl2's engines. the entire game of half life 1 fits inside hl2's engine without any problems except those valve made by developing half life source haphazardly.

im also talking retroactively.. the game impressed at the time and if you bought it back then you would have got your moneys worth. and now it acts as a successor to half life 1, it is LITERALLY a 2004 game with graphics 3-4 years ahead of its time of release, but with a clunky old 90s engine and old-school MSDOS-shooter 8 weapon inventory gameplay with quake bhopping and shit.

More weapon variety is always good. You're pretty much always using the same 2 or 3 weapon in HL2 and they aren't particularly fun, like the SMG.

The game is alright, but it's not the masterpiece it is made out to be. It's very obvious that the game was hailed for it's tech as it's actual gameplay is only really acceptable.

114 hours, only 2 are annoying on replay and those are the dumb seesaw in canals and the floating blue barrels. if any of the other ones are annoying to you on replay then you're trying to get mad

HL2 beta had many weapons, every time they gave the player more than 4 they didnt know what the fuck to use. Players preferred having 3 tight nit weapons to work with than 3 SMG/Rifles and 3 pistols. Also xen weaponry is almost completely off the table in hl2 so idk what you expect.

I wouldn't call it a tech demo but the gameplay is pretty bad by today's standards. The graphics however I still feel hold up, especially after all the updates to Source.

Huge misconception. The shooting in HL2 isn't bad at all. It's the fact that enemies are bulletsponges. If you drop every enemy's HP points by 25 the weapons feel much better

Shooting is shit in both games but HL1 has a lot fewer annoyances and flows better. If you play HL2 on hard the enemes will absorb shotgun blasts too.

I didn't enjoy a single HL2 map until Episode 2, the base game has it pretty bad with the "playtested and sandpapered into oblivion" thing.

Which wouldn't be a problem outside of those hugely repetitive segments where not much changes. Inside Nova Prospekt, the infamous boat level, surprised their playtesting didn't pick up on overall pacing issues.
