Why is Hollow Knight so much better than a lot of recent metroidvania games?

why is Hollow Knight so much better than a lot of recent metroidvania games?
it beats the crap out of shit like Axiom Verge, Environmental Station Alpha, ori, blasphemous and others.
What went right?

>recent
has there even been metroidvania since castlevania order of ecclesia?

Made with love by very talented people.

>Still shilling this trash
Devs must be desperate now that people have started to realize it's not good.

Based contrarian

reddit knight

t.filtered by watcher knights

>no story just „lore“, which doesnt belong in video games
>have to walk 5 minutes from nearest bench to a boss (soul master, knight watchers, hive knight)
>challenge is arriving at the boss as fast as possible without being tilted out of your mind or low hp when the challenge should be the boss itself
This game is good but really fucking overrated. If they just put a bench next to each boss like every other metroidvania and increased the difficulty of the bosses that alone would make it way more enjoyable

It's really not better than any of those games you listed. And all of these games are good, Hollow Knight included. There's no need to start a competition between them. Blasphemous is the best, though.

I enjoyed Environmental Station Alpha more :-)

>which doesnt belong in video games
elaborate, I wanna hear what stupid shit you're gonna say to support that argument.

>game made by aussies
>characters don't call eachother limey cunts every 5 seconds
>only one area has spiders the size of bathtubs
>only one are has painful, stinging jellyfish
>no abbo bugs period

So inaccurate.

i really did not like that game, puut about 2 hours into it before putting it down

>axiom verge
a blatant super metroid clone that, despite better qol, doesn't do anything to put it over super metroid and has worse atmosphere
>ori
while good, it's almost a parody of Rain World and Hollow Knight because of how much it sells itself on being about a cute creature in a sad world. has less content and is altogether easier and more cinematic
>blasphemous
I haven't played enough to have a real opinion on it but the reason I haven't played enough is that it feels like one of those monster world clones where the level design is flat and simple and the movement is really restricted, like if Shantae were made by angry catholics

That‘s just my personal opinion but i think having to watch a 50 minute youtube SUMMARY just to know what the fuck is going on in a game is retarded. Obviously if i paid attention to every single thing an npc said throughout the game or read all these „things“ on walls with a bunch of cryptic shit i could make out what i‘m actually doing. Also doesn‘t help when i find a secret passage and instead of getting a powerup, charm or anything useful i am presented with a bunch or cryptic lore bullshit i don‘t even understand

good thing you don't have to watch anything if you just pay attention to what's going on in the game.

>it beats the crap out of shit like Axiom Verge, Environmental Station Alpha
This makes it obvious bait but I genuinely think that hkfags are retarded enough to believe that.

both of those games sucked

and hollow knight was worse

axiom verge isn't great user. it had a lot of potential but it goes out like a wet fart by being too easy and imitating metroid too much

oh, you're shitposting

Well I really liked it! Areas were all distinct and fun to traverse through, bosses get hectic very quickly and are great in general, and even when you include post-game stuff and secret bosses it's not nearly as overwrought in terms of length/pacing as Hollow Knight. Oh and it has a great grappling hook. Grappling hooks are inherently great, so a great grappling is amazing. :~)

>being too easy
>a complaint from a hkshill
lol heres your you

God tier combat

Again, just present a fucking story like every game should and most do. I mean i still enjoyed the game because the exploration and combat was pretty good but when i play for 20 hours and still don‘t know what even the premise of the game is, i stopped caring about the story until after i finished the game

I liked ESA more than HK solely because of the hookshot. Then there is the post-game stuff.
Would've been nice if there was more than one weapon. Then again, that hardly made Axiom Verge worth playing.

I'd like to believe you really think that but every day we have a dozen people complaining about the map system being too hard and how having to avoid taking damage is "artificial difficulty"
HK shouldn't be a hard game, though it seems to be for some people on Yas Forums, but at the barest minimum it absolutely has challenge to it, while axiom verge doesn't

this is a you problem

>get to new areas primarily by increasing your mobility
>very little of “you found the blue laser beam now you can open the blue laser doors”

>Appealing art style that stands out in a sea of pixel art indie titles
>Soundtrack that pushes the tone of each area into the forefront of the players experience, enhancing the melancholy, raising the tension or embracing the fear of the different areas in the game
>The complexity is created by the moveset of the enemies instead of the moveset of the player, giving it an approachable feel while also having incredibly difficult encounters in the end game
>Map system that manages to get the player lost while simultaneously granting the player a means to catalog their exploration
>Intriguing lore that exists in the background, giving invested players satisfying reveals if they choose to dig into it
>Multitude of different characters that the player will meet and form bonds with throughout the game
>Significant environmental variety as a result of an impressive game length
>Solid array of movement based powerups, some of typical metroidvania fare while others are unique to the game
>Exploration is rewarded by giving the player additional combat options
>Death is such that it can have heavy repercussions if encountered at an inopportune moment while also being inconsequential if the player is chain attempting a difficult battle
>Has all the typical hallmarks of a 2d metroidvania for speed runners, different in game challenges, timed modes and achievements, sequence breaking
>Has received multiple significant pieces of downloaded content since launch, all of which has been free

That's why.

Hollow knight is decent but it easily has some of the most generic and boring metroidvania powerups ever. Like Jesus Christ, a wall jump, a double jump, and a shinespark knockoff? How original.

I like how they tried to make a meat boy tier platforming gauntlet in a game where the controls obviously weren’t designed for that
Like how your double jump makes you dip down before actually ascending so you can still die if you double jump too close to spikes

>blasphemous
gee a platformer with a fucking stamina bar, I sure do wonder why it was near instantly forgotten

>What went right?
Nothing. You retards like it becauae nothing went wrong, but nothing went right either. It's just there, as anyone who's played other games before a d after HK will tell you

>T. What is a Metroidvania?

can you try again, but in english this time?

It's basic as fuck and doesnt do anything new
Is that clear enough for you?

>doesn't do anything new
good thing it does everything well instead.

It feels nice to play and the music is great
The zones could look a bit better/more diverse because it's just a bunch of interconnected screens but overall it's a good game and I liked it enough to 112% it

dont reply to him he's trolling you

>good thing it does two things well instead
FTFY

if you couldnt grasp the premise of the game then jesus christ man you are one stupid fucker

>stating facts is trolling
At what point did these threads become such pitiful circlejerks?

samefag

you haven't made a single concrete statement though. you've just been shitposting vaguely.

good job schizo

Axiom Verge was garbage, don't understand why it got any praise.

Because it doesn't try anything new, it just takes ideas from other games and compiles them into one game. It's well-made, especially for an indie game, but that's about it.

nice html edit

>It's basic as fuck and doesnt do anything new
>this is vague shitposting and not a solid fact
Man, this is just sad. Are reddittors really that uppity about Silksong dying in development hell?

this doesn't have any bearing on the quality of the game, but keep shitposting

schizo

>quality
This doesnt have any bearing on how fun or complex the gameplay is but sure, keep circlejerking
Better yet, do that back in reddit or discord or whatever cesspool you crawled out of

>the quality of a game doesn't have any bearing on the quality of a game
stopped reading here

a schizo would be a samefag. i.e you.
also, being autistic enough to edit out a (you) won’t help anyone like you more.

Easy to pick up and a massive world to explore, takes a cue from other genres when needed. Doesn't bog you down with stats or randomised loot nonsense but Charms still provide a measure of customisation. A few side quests to do but it doesn't overload you for bloat. Amazing atmosphere and good background art, but the characters are simple with clear recognisable silhouettes.

It's an example of having a clear formula that works, and they don't skimp on the content. Lots of other games, especially indies, have similarly good ideas but they can't afford/be bothered to have a big world to play with. In contrast, Hollow Knight is an indie but would be a AAA game on an older console, it's a full experience.

Why is hollow knight getting several threads daily now? I mean I enjoy the game but godmaster came out two years ago

I liked it. Had a good mix of platforming and interesting combat. Levels were nice and enemies dece fly varied.

Bummed out there is no spider boss, but Grimm troupe was fantastic. Nice soundtrack.

Pretty good game in general.

>hollow knight
>fun or complex gameplay
Absolutely pitiful. Also
>animeposter
pottery

>replying to the same post twice
okay schizo

you're on an anime website, though you shouldn't be

I like Hollow Knight but a lot of it is style over substance, it doesn't have interesting weapons and powerups like Axiom Verge, it doesn't have as interesting movement as ESA, its combat isn't as in depth or builds as varied as Valdis Story. Hollow Knights charm is its presentation and sense of exploration and mystery.

shouldn’t have posted the edit as “proof”. it only revealed the truth.

>No argument, just seethe
The fact that you're a retard and a tourist is just painfully obvious now

>I'm not the one who needs to make an argument, YOU ARE!

you might actually have schizophrenia

Attached: ducks itt.gif (300x226, 2.02M)

Just salty, salty retards in quarantine with nothing better to do.
The fact that Silksong is in development hell/feature creep is painfully obvious now, and Hollow knight doesnt really hold up well for replays either further exacerbates things

>feature creep
can I get a rundown?

>doesnt really hold up well for replays
It’s way more fun going through the second time though and understanding the oblique references people NPCs are feeding you the whole game. Or just having that big brain moment meeting Quirrel outside the Black Egg and realizing the mask on the door is the same one on his head and you just missed it the first time.

>that total lack of self awareness
Cant say I didnt expect that from a retarded tourist. I'm certainly enjoying the show of irony though

Just look up their blog. It has a grand total of two updates since Silksong was announced

i suppose it takes a schizo to know a schizo.
are you sure this thread even exists? maybe this is how you WOULD actually behave if such a scenario was real.

>everyone who I disagree with is the same person!
>I-I'm not schizphrenic, you are!
whatever helps you cope

>First file for a vanilla playthrough
>Second file for another playthrough after update/ get cheevos (like banish the troupe, purity and neglect)
>Third savefile for Steel soul
>Fourth to play godseeker mode which is pointless considering godhome is exactly the same as your first playthrough file
Two playthroughs maximum. The game doesnt support any more than that
