JRPG Thread

Quarantine Edition. FFXII was on sale on Switch so I just got it and it's comfy as fuck so far. Love going around the city. Also finishing up on Front Mission 5

What's a good jrpg?

Final Fantasy 5

There are so many different styles that it's hard to pick a good one without knowing what sticks with you. I'd say the JRPG I always recommend for having a good blend of (emotional) story, great gameplay and fantastic dungeons is Valkyrie Profile. The beginning is super long, but after that it's a lot of fun and you form an attachment with a lot of characters.

meh. played them.

Cool, we don't care.

You cared enough to reply ;)

And not much more than that

Any specifics? I'm listing the my favorite ones:
>Final Fantasy: Tactics, X and X-2 (the last is kind of silly, but fun)
>Kingdom Hearts in general
>Chrono Trigger
>Xenogears
>Sword of Mana and Trials of Mana
>Riviera: The Promised Land
>Breath of Fire 3 and 4
>Parasite Eve
>Tales of Eternia

>Caligula Overdose
>Atelier Ayesha
>End of Eternity/Resonance of Fate
Which one do I play first, Yas Forums?

Resonance of Fate is by far the better game in your list. Super comfy

Still goin' at it and prepping for a second NG+, probably as Minato. Shit's gonna be great.

Why?

Don't judge a book by its cover :^)
Survive Light's frankly somewhat useless, but that was a skill evolution, so go figure. Might replace it with something like Pralaya or Blade of Fury for a laugh when I get outta Monad.

I mean, sure, you can do something like this, but I don't really see a point in building a low level persona when you have a shitton of stronger options.

I mean, the other four (Michael not included, I intend to replace him with my Lv99 Shiva) pretty much fill that blank - Surt for crit-heavy Slash + Fire, Odin for Elec, Sati for Ice (eventually, anyway), and Shiva for Wind + crit-heavy Pierce.

You're not wrong in saying that I *could* use stronger, easier-to-beef Personas, given that they're more accessible and don't require several, grindy Skill Cards. But where's the fun in that?

Attached: demichad.png (640x640, 309.69K)

And where's the fun in grinding skill cards?

I'd say the fun's less in the grind itself and more in the result. There's something fulfilling about slowly upgrading your Persona from being either weak or just plain / decent to being worth a damn and then some (i.e. ditching Take-Mikazuchi's puny-ass Mazio and Zio for Lilith's Maziodyne and Byakko's Ziodyne). Besides, the grind itself isn't really that bad; having Growth 3 on more valuable Personas means you can basically just cheese through a dungeon with a Persona you're more used to while raking in free XP for the others.

I could just be talking out of my ass, though. It's a good way of killing time, if nothing else :V

Towelket 3

The one you enjoy.

Should I play FFV or VI?

6 for the story. 5 for the gameplay.

Sorry bros Bannerlord just came out. No JRPG today.

I hope you enjoy the game, bro.

Any tips for 5? I never played an FF game besides XI and XIV

Read the manuals.

Also picked up FF XII. Any tips which classes are good for which characters? So far I made Vaan a hunter, Fran a machinist, Balthier a red mage and Basch a Paladin? Sorry if class names are wrong, I'm not playing the game in English

I think it's easy to understand on its own. Just pick different jobs that you like. You're better served with a healer and damage dealers but you can get creative. Blue Mage is super fun in this game if you want to get enemy skills. You can also get FFXII if you want the Final Fantasy that XIV was the most inspired by and is interested in the lore/world-building.

nice I was planning on doing that anyways

blue mage always interested me whenever I heard about it in other FF games, and I was thinking of playing XII too because I loved everything about the Ivalice raids

You can win with anything as long as you pick a varied enough team comp and upgrade properly. The majority of your stats come from the job augments and equipment.

I'm playing FFXII for the first time. The gambit system is a little rough at first, but it's slowly growing on me. I'm enjoying everything thus far, Basch just joined my team, but my biggest gripe is that equipment feels like an afterthought. I don't like that you have to upgrade the license board to be able to equip new weapons and armor.

experiment with your items and equipment. For example, you can use a rod in battles as an item to unleash a powerful spell but sacrifice the rod. This is great against tough bosses. Or you can do something quirky like giving a Berserker a dagger - it does only a little less damage than an axe, but has 100% accuracy rather than the axes 80%. If you do that with the Main Gauche, a certain hard boss in the early game will crumble within a few turns.

I might continue my Urpina playthrough in Scarlet Grace.

Phantasy Star IV
Radiant Historia
TWEWY
Legend of Legaia

Do it for her, go full genocide route.

I’m playing through Radiant Historia and taking the time to do some sidequests I missed out on to get some new skills and equipment for my crew. Shit’s actually pretty fun.

Is that a motherfucking Ghost Trick reference?

A novel approach to open ended exploration from the 90s that still holds up today.

Chrono Trigger

I waa hoping to take a break from 3 Houses to play TWEWY, I'm hoping to get it emulating on my tablet for max size and comfort, but all the rom sites are dead

Good luck, user. TWEWY is a great game but it’s not exactly easy to play on emulator.

Does Bloodborne count as a JRPG?

Yeah but these threads tend to be about games that can’t really carry a thread on their own, BB gets them all the time

>implying games like Chrono Trigger, Persona, and Kingdom Hearts can’t carry threads

Resonance of Fate is really good but it's difficult and super unique.
One of the best games of the PS3/360 gen.

I'm playing The Last Remnant which is pretty much FF12 SaGa edition. Worldbuilding, lore, sidequests and combat are great. It's just the level design, shitty dungeons and mediocre plot that drags it down. But damn that combat is so good

Also playing FFXII right now, at Mosphoran Highwaste. Spent the last few hours hunting, antlion was a pain in the ass but got him.
Can anyone redpill me on why guns should be better than crossbows? I have a Machinist/Time Mage Balthier and I don't see the appeal in guns. Does the piercing damage make such a difference? I guess it could be good for the endgame.

Is it worth giving a shot? What’s the combat like?

I can't even stomach saga games and I loved TLR.

The plot is actually pretty good once you get in the second half and the game starts dropping all those worldbuilding sidequests and elaborates on the Conqueror, but yeah, the dungeons are offensively bad most of the times, which makes me glad they didn't even try with Scarlet since it's clear they didn't care much in TLR and only did those out of necessity.
I'm honestly more bothered by the upgrade system being full of pointless filler, magazines, rare hunts and the more linear progression than the dungeons.

It's also pretty embarassing how a side project ends up one upping FFXII so hard at its own game and setting.
