I feel really guilty about the moment of displeasure I had upon discovering ARMS would be getting a fighter in Smash. Because I hadn't played the game I was disappointed that it would be a fighter I wasn't familiar with. But then I saw the free trial so I went ahead and gave it a shot and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Now I'm excited for the Smash character but I feel bad because if I haven't tried it I would have just sat there stewing in anger for the next few months. So even though no one would have found this out, I still want to apologize to the ARMS fanbase. I have found you to be a pretty chill and friendly bunch.

One thing I will say though, is that even after all the updates ARMS feels pretty light on content even by fighting game standards. So I hope the sequel has something to give it more meat, like a more in depth story mode.

Yeah OP I had the same evolution and series of thoughts you did. You actually described my experience down to the details so I can’t really say anything to contribute.

ARMS is fun. I'd like a bit more fighter focus and some more "custom"-feeling arms in the sequel. Like say Ribbon gets 4-5 arms, period, but they're tailor-made for her. She's got some arms that have faster recovery while she's in the air, or arms that charge up instantly when she jumps, stuff like that.

Now that they've got the core mechanics out of the way I think they've got an opportunity to flesh it out more. Like SF2 vs SF1.

>OP discovers brewing negativity over games they haven't even played robs posters from discovering unexpected gems

If only everyone followed your lead, buddy. Even if they end up disliking it at least they can do so from experience.

This. Salt culture is incredibly moronic and the fact that Yas Forums is so obsessed with it dumbfounds me.

i really do need to dick around some more with this game, if only to discover a "hook"
i'm not into one-on-one fighting games so it's gonna be an acquired taste for me

Meh, I'm not surpised. It's standard on Yas Forums now. Fuckfaces like you see a game doesn't get a 9/10 and immediately think it's shit despite still getting some pretty decent overall scores. The game has mechanical depth under the hood but nobody was willing to give it a chance. I don't even care at this point because I did give it a chance and I'll remember arms for a long time. It unironically is a hidden gem.

I think there's a multiplayer mode where you can play it with four people, but I haven't played it.

>One thing I will say though, is that even after all the updates ARMS feels pretty light on content even by fighting game standards. So I hope the sequel has something to give it more meat, like a more in depth story mode.
Same
ARMS has some ridiculous potential, it just need to come out the gate with some more momentum. A story mode that acts as a tutorial to bring new players up to par on more complex actions and techniques and strategies would be good (maybe gimmick levels where you're basically just drilling one core mechanic).
Also, I'd like it if each character was a bit more distinct, maybe with more unique Rush mechanics or unique interactions with different ARMS types

>Like say Ribbon gets 4-5 arms, period, but they're tailor-made for her.
That's not a half bad idea. It would also help balancing since you know that any fighter would only have those ARMS
Maybe break it up into casual and comp: casual is any character can use any ARMS from any other character, competitive is each character can only use their own ARMS

I never really understood why people are flipping their shit over arms in smash. It seems like a pretty inoffensive choice. Im glad the game is free though I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Some things I would add to a sequel to add some depth/more options.

>Allow certain arms to juggle, maybe fully charged non-elemental arms can juggle outside of Rushes?
>As an addendum, if you're caught in a juggle you can press Dash to tech out of the juggle
>Have stronger identities by having a smaller range of ARMS available to each fighter

The game is insanely fun once it clicks, I'd appreciate a bit more depth in the combat outside of different ARMS.

These are both really good ideas, hope they do something similar to these at least. They should also add little quips during victory screens, some character vs. character banter never hurt anybody in a fighting game.

The casual-comp split is an insanely good idea, actually.

It's because people don't like the game. They don't want to put time into discovering the mechanics because in reality 90% of players dont want to git gud. They just take everything at face value and when they see no campaign they lose interest. People expect arms to be more than what it is: a fighting game.

Literally the same here. I was saying “ah man who wanted this?” when they announced an ARMS fighter because I judged the book by its cover and just thought ARMS looked like a soulless nu Nintendo game that nobody played. After playing the trial though I really like the game and I’m looking forward to see which character they decide to add to Smash.

Nah fuck that. Shrinking loadouts literally goes against the philosophy of arms. It's entirely about customising your playstyle

That's why you make it unlimited in casual mode. I think it'd add a lot. What you do is you sort of split things 3 ways

>offline
>online casual
>online comp
Each with their own little quirks. Offline maybe takes some inspiration from Smash's offline, you level up your arms and fighters and stuff and equip badges for bonuses. Online casual you're increasing your level for cosmetics, online comp is self-explanatory. Lets you capture the solo audience, the casual audience, and the competitive audience. If a guy wants to make his crazy jump-build Master Mummy, he can do it, but he just can't bring it into ranked where the balance can't account for what happens in every single combinations of arms and fighters.

I'm gonna give it more time, but man does the game feel incredibly slow. The aesthetic of slowly tossing your hands over does not sit right with me

And I say fuck that. Arms is its own thing. Fuck off with trying to turn it into smash. The only ones that would suggest limiting arm loadouts in comp are shitters who can't make it to rank 20. Fuck off.

I kind of had the same thing happen, but then I reminded myself that Kirby, Marth, DQIV's Hero, and Byleth are all in the game, so I shouldn't be upset.
Also a friend of mine showed me how Max Brass is fucking hilarious, and I love him.

How long you been playing?

I am so fucking glad ARMS is getting shine like this now. Right after w101’s revival too

I saw a post earlier that put it pretty well. Max Brass is pretty much what Captain Falcon would be if Captain Falcon's Smash personality was his actual canon personality. Just a guy that yells YAS and poses and grunts loudly all the time.

>Fuck off with trying to turn it into smash.
I'm not trying to turn it into Smash, I'm trying to turn it into a success. I don't even fucking like Smash.

>The only ones that would suggest limiting arm loadouts in comp are shitters who can't make it to rank 20
It has nothing to do with skill. It has to do with the direction of the game design. And the fucking balance. Tell me honestly that more than 50% of the ARMS in the game even see use at high levels of play, because that's not my fucking experience.

You finally understand OP

A lot of arms see use at higher levels of play. Limiting loadouts serves literally no purpose than to shrink the skill gap

I'd like to thank Sakurai for saving ARMS

Arms is great. All it needed was a fleshed out story mode with cutscenes and people would have considered it the next Splatoon for sure and an instant classic.

I recently popped ARMS back in after the hype and I was suprised about the updates, I had no idea they added a gallery with lore, that really should have been in the base game.

But yeah, it's still really light, it reeks of experimental early title. The game itself is fun.. butt-fuck hard if you want to beat Coyle. Especially with a slower character like Mummy. But fun.

I actually wanted Spring-Man in since day 1, imo Smash is still a Nintendo celebration first and foremost, so I thought even a less well received title like ARMS still should have gotten priority over the most wanted and most famous third parties.

I'm not personally a huge fan of the game but I always found it really weird that this new IP for Nintendo, especially with it being a fighting game, somehow didn't get to be one of Ultimate's initial newcomers along with Inkling.

I think ARMS has a really cool style and aesthetic, I love the music and the characters and stuff but the game just isn't for me.

Was extremely happy to hear that it's finally getting the spot it deserves with a representative in Smash.

I don't think modifying the gameplay would have affected ARMS' success at all. I think what it needed to be a success was more content. Splatoon had a significant amount more content.

Yas Forums in general is like this, it's not just Yas Forums, it's basically a containment site for the most unlikeable people.

>first season pass is full of third party reps that are sure to get most people excited
>then Byleth happened
>then ARMS happened despite that game flopping
It's natural to feel disappointed even if the choice itself isn't so bad, it goes against the expectations they set at the beginning, it was bound to happen.

>if I keep saying it flopped, they'll believe me

Aside from Banjo, the first pass was blatantly just Sakurai picking characters he personally liked. Don't get me wrong, they're good characters, but he wasn't picking them "to get most people excited."

Yeah and I'm suggesting ways to add more content

????? no it doesn't. Especially if you let people choose 2 different loadouts for left and right arm, and you give the arms deeper mechanics. I'm curious about what skill gap you think is created by letting people pick between FIRE PUNCH and ICE PUNCH that is incredibly vital to the health of the game that we couldn't make WAY bigger by following my advice.

It's just a stupid idea and change for the sake of change. Believe what you want, I've been part of the arms community long enough that I know a good amount of people will push back on that idea. It serves no purpose. If you want slightly more complex mechanics, they can be added universally, there's absolutely no reason to go against a core philosophy of the game just so shitters like you have a 0.0002% higher chance of making it to rank 20

>Max Brass is the true protagonist
>ARMs 2 is about him tracking down Coyle for fucking up his tournament

Attached: 1585535141319.jpg (1653x2339, 456.16K)

>If you want slightly more complex mechanics, they can be added universally
No, they can't. You'd be better off arguing to keep things exactly the same than to ask for this. If you care even the tiniest bit about the competitive balance in this game, you wouldn't ask for 20+ new arms with complicated mechanics that have to be balanced for what is probably going to be 20+ characters. It's just not possible to do. There WILL be completely broken shit.

It might not be this game, but very soon, ARMS is going to run up against a wall in terms of its game design. It's a great game, but there's very little room to grow while maintaining the integrity of the competitive balance. Already, there are certain combinations of characters and arms that blow others out of the water.

I hope they actually release that comic book instead of just letting it disappear.

If you like ARMS, try Mario Tennis for GBC. Alternatively, if you like Mario Tennis for GBC, try ARMS.

No, I'm not joking, they are exactly the same game. Get to the grand championship as a technique / speed character in Tennis, you'll see. You'll fucking see.

I have actually played that game a little bit, and I found the amount of tennis terminology to be quite overwhelming. It's a sports game but it has an RPG level of dialogue.

Is this GN ever going to come out? I feel like it was announced the year the game launched, and Ian Flynn even said it's still in the works as far as he knows, but how fucking long can it take to show literally any sign of progress?

With the exception of explosive arms more specifically the triblast, there's nothing outright busted in the first game so why wouldn't I assume they'd be able to balance 3 to 5 more characters plus their arms in the sequel? I realize they'll hit a wall eventually but assuming they add characters/arms at a steady pace, that could be 6 sequels down the line before we see anything truly broken. You're probably assuming we'll get something crazy like 10 new characters next game

I really hope ARMS gets a sequel because it has the potential to be fucking god tier if they don’t rush it out like they did with the original. That being said I still think the game is a lot of fun and god tier character designs and world along with the fun gameplay and roster make for a good time in short bursts.

>so why wouldn't I assume they'd be able to balance 3 to 5 more characters plus their arms in the sequel?
Because the number of combinations grows quadratically in arms and characters? This shit catches up on you faster than you'd think. Don't underestimate combinatorics.

Coyle had unique dialogue for every fighter, but I think it was just her

You seem like you know your stuff, what's better between motion controls and a regular controller? I feel like being able to curve each arm separately is too important to ignroe.

>tfw never hated it since switch presentation reveal
Feels good. ARMS is fun. There just isn't much in terms of content though, so hopefully a future game improves on that as well as the gameplay to make the "it's not interesting enough" people shut the fuck up.

You're leaving out key details like the fact that of the arms added, a good portion of them will be recolors like in the current game. They know what they're doing. Heavy use of AI in pre launch balancing with patches afterwards based on online data.

It depends on how you play. I use a pro controller because i dont wanna move around too much while gaming. I work out when I work out. I relax when I game. Some things are also kinda finicky with motion controls

>He's just loudly chanting his name over and over
Oh no he's perfect

>OP stops being a fag, realizes that not being a fag has its perks

I know it's niche but I still wish we got the sound test mode people wanted so we could set the main menu music to whatever we want and listen to music whenever without having to start a game on a certain stage

Probably got shelved when Arms didn't become the next Splatoon

They might be hanging onto it specifically so that they can use it to build hype leading into ARMS 2, which will definitely be announced in June at the replacement for E3. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Anyone wanna spar? It's late but I'll give a few lessons. I wanna grow the community on Yas Forums even though most of you are horrible people

Looks bat to me. I'd much rather Nintendo go back to putting in less character and focus on improving gameplay and move set of the their classic characters rather than ever expanding roster of gay ass new IP's that appeal to no outside of advertisers.

Arms isn't like splatoon though. It doesn't have the gay ass product placement stuff...yet. hopefully nintendo doesn't add that shit later. I trust yabuki

What product placement does Splatoon have?

I don't play but I remember that tmnt thing they did. They also did some shoe line thing

Can I still get matches on ARMS? I put it away but haven't played in a while.

Arms was fun but grinding for arms was the fasted way to kill a fighting game.
Also having everyone's "super" just kind of be the same made the characters feel more samey than they should have.

I'd really like a sequel though, it's a good idea and they should build on it.

>2.5 mil flop
Shit nigga, where do you put other Japs games that barely get 50k sold?

What exactly is your definition of "flop"?

I mean, Mario Odyessy sold great, and was warmly recieved, but nobody talks about it anymore because there's not much else to say. Would you call it a flop?

There's a free trial going on right now so for the time being it is very active.

I was never cheering on an ARMS fighter, mostly because I figured since Spring Man was an assist trophy, that would be where they'd get their representation in game fighting. But when I heard the news the next fighter would be an ARMS one, even though I wasn't hoping for that, I had an immediate feeling of approval. A thought of, this is completely appropriate it, and I totally support it. If the other DLC fighters to get added feel like that, then I'll be very happy even if none of them were characters I had been cheering for.
