Yakuza 0 is a good place to start and is available on PS4 and PC. Kiwami is a reamke of the first game using 0's engine, combat, mini games ect. so it's a good second game since you can play the story in chronological order then. Alternatively you could get the original 2 games on PS2 if you have one but the translation isn't good and I think they cut some of the gambling games.

Literally Yakuza 0. It's the best in the series and also chronologically the first occurring story so you need no prior knowledge.

Just play them 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in that order. They're all on PS4 so if you have that it works out great

Nearly every heat move you do definitely kills the victim or at the very least leaves them permanently crippled, and you do those hundreds of times per game

The game separates gameplay from story, you could easily say he killed people from heat moves, action cinematics, and on-rails shooter sections.
But the canon is that he never killed anyone to set up as a role model to others, which is kinda silly because it paints ALMOST everyone who killed others in this series as a straight fucking punk or villian.

Man I was playing Kiwami and I wasn't expecting a bottle finisher to result in him just stabbing a dude in the gut and then pushing it slowly further into the wound before they crumple over. These memes wouldn't exist if some of the heats weren't so fucking brutal, among other reasons.

The combat system is completely different, in fact Kiwami and Kiwami 2 are very different from each other too, since they use different engines.
It's mostly a matter of preference although the Kiwami games certainly have a lot more extra content, although in Kiwami 1 it's mostly recycled from 0.

Honestly there's nothing Kiwami 1 has that 0 lacks, Kiwami is just inferior. I'm glad I played it first.
When you get to Kiwami do the main story, the pocket circuit and Majima Everywhere and then move on. Kiwami 2 is great.

Kiwami 1 is honestly 0's gameplay with more restrictions (you start with Dragon of Dojima, for example, but it has to level through the Majima Everywhere events, which are technically RNG if a little manipulable as Shakedown replacements), 1's relatively barebones story with the cutscenes even copypasted, only Kamurocho since Sotenbori was introduced in 2, and that goddamn Essence of Kiwami boss health regen shit. If you go straight from 0 to K1 like I did, it feels like you're just playing more of the same but with a stiffer Kiryu leveling curve and less content.

I just use dragon against everything but certain bosses because the combo grabs are too much fun
