it really is a hidden gem
No. That would be MP 2!
Nah, Zero Mission is the best Metroid.
No. Pic related is
No, but definitely top 50 or so. Maybe even top 30.
yes
Nope
It was fucking amazing, that's for sure. For sidescrolling platformers, this and Megaman-X sure had a fucking insane immersive atmosphere. Would love for a remake of Super Metroid with slight extra RP and survival elements (slight note, not the kind of shit they raped and ruined Zelda with in BoTW). That lonely, isolated feeling with this weird sci-fi / noir / horror theme was just so fucking amazing.
Yes, it is.
Zero Mission is good but the worst of good 2d Metroids
No, but the sheer quality of its level and world design is almost never matched, let alone exceeded. Top 10 for sure, unfortunately.
its ridiculously good for a game from 1994
no
It's the only SNES game that still holds up, fight me
No, but its really really fucking high up there.
I think chrono trigger and super mario world also holds up
It's the best metroidvania for sure. Nothing else balances exploration with platforming as well.
I didn't feel like there was that much exploration in SM desu maybe I'm just jaded from modern games
Jesus, Hell no. Great art and sound though.
nope, the controls and overall gameplay is 6/10
all these fucking years and SM has still not been dethroned
can it be done? will it?
you're asking for trouble posting this on Yas Forums, Yas Forums hates exploration games.
Its not even in the top 10 of metroidvanias anymore. Its extremely dated.
Name a single Metroidvania better than SM
Never gave a shit about Metroid.
NES-style MM > MMX style
But that's not Star Fox.
Fusion
Fusion is the worst Metroid besides Other M
SM has amazing hacks. I don't think any other game has hacks this good.
Ruined by hand holding map statues and overpowered super missiles. The original metroid was fine without those.
I honestly have to ask Yas Forums.
but I played this and hollow knight in the past year and was confused how ANYONE could say super metroid is better.
super metroid has top tier music and art, but the gameplay is just sad.
Most hallways are UTTER bullshit that you will get in, but it doesn't matter at all because you can easily have like 500 health and a sub-tank. Most bosses are pathetic pushovers. the controls are just horrible, the map is small and exploration is rarely actually rewarded.
meanwhile hollow knight has top tier gameplay, more side content than metroid has in total, rewarding exploration, and has some of the most challenge a video game can offer.
how is this even a comparison?
i laughed. gj user.
>I don't think any other game has hacks this good
I'd say mario but I imagine you don't like games with good gameplay if you like metroid.
Definately the best metroid, all things considered. Everything since has only been an attempt to redo it with minimal changes; even prime was basically just super metroid in 3d.
first off, super metroid let you bind your controls. if you didn't like em, that shits on you. check the options of your games, lazy nigger.
for a melee specialist game with limited ranged options, hollow knight combat feels like boring 2d darksouls. hollowknight overstays its welcome, yet doesn't have satisfying mobility or offensive upgrades.
the stupid fucking badges suck and you want the map and compass thing most of the time anyway. Really, if you dodge and go into swing at the right time, whatever fucking upgrade you like the most doesnt matter.
in metroid, being overpowered is earned. rightfully so, exploring helps you handle any and every situation. yet somehow, SM is also short and sweet while designed to be replayable. I never wanna slog through HK ever again, its "one and done".
Dunno about best but it's definitely up there
One of the best games of all time.
Super metroid has infinitely more depth in its movement which is very impressive for a game 23 years older. SM has a much higher skill ceiling than hollow knight. SM is far less linear, allowing you to beat the four main bosses in any possible order with a thousand different item combinations. Just a couple reasons why I prefer it aside from the aesthetics and music
Nope, not even close
Not even remotely, but it is a great game.
>bing bing wahoo
>good gameplay
Metroid has some excellent hacks too.
youtube.com
It would have to be this for me
>start off playing right away
>upgrades
>finish one level you go straight to whichever one you like
>dashing and wall sliding feel fantastic
I replay it at least once every few years.
There isn't a single Metroidvania with good combat. Who the fuck looks at the Metroidvania genre and thinks: "yah, I play this for the combat".
Super Metroid excels at level design, progression, exploration, theme, mood, and art designs, in which Hollow Knight could only dream of.
This. SM basically invented exploration in games.

The controls in Super Metroid will always be fucked no matter how you bind them because Samus feels floaty as hell and the run button is retarded.
The run button must have seemed like a good idea at the time. There are many hacks that make you run automatically and make the game less floaty, so those really aren't valid complaints for game from 1994.
It's the best Metroid game/Metroidvania
You really can't do better than Super Metroid in that genre
>well these rom hacks fix it
we are discussing the base game, thats completely valid
hence why I said "it was a good idea at the time" and "those aren't valid complaints for a game from 1994"
That's really iconic boxart there, but why did they stick Kraid's crotch at the top there?
i never noticed kraid there lmao
Zero Mission is fine but it's basically just a watered down Super
Fusion isn't even a Metroidvania
>Samus feels floaty as hell
I played both Fusion and Zero Mission and kept hearing this complaint about Super, then when I actually played the game it was floatier than those games but it felt absolutely fine. This is a pure meme complaint.
I'm of the opinion that Super Metroid is better than Hollow Knight, but Hollow Knight is definitely a less linear game than Super Metroid. You basically need to exploit the game to a massive degree in Super Metroid to access Ridley or Draygon first, while Hollow Knight gives real choice as to which order you tackle the three dreamers. Any casual playthrough of SM will go KPDR, but a casual playthrough of Hollow Knight could take many paths.
I never liked this game, the actual gameplay and platforming is mediocre and I HATE backtracking shit so much
level traversal and design in Super Metroid is 100x better than hk
Eh it had better bosses and controls. Agree other than that
>Better bosses
Can't say I agree there.
>Kraid is basically the same as in Super
>Ridley is an lame fight because his wonky hitboxes make it ridiculously easy
>Mother Brain is also basically the same as in Super but without the cool scripted finale
>All of the new bosses are completely forgettable and feel like filler
This guy gets it
Yeah, probably.
After over a decade I played SM and symphony back to back, no comparison.
>have played Zero Mission, Fusion, and Samus Returns
>can't muster the desire to play Super Metroid
Eh you say filler I disagree. Kraid is FAR better in ZM. Better size and forces you to actually learn him and jump off the spikes. Mother Brain isn't the same at all, ZM is much harder. The mini bosses are also fun.
That's what I felt at first trying to get into super but after a full playthrough zero felt stripped down and overly stiff, fusion was the one to get the balance right.
