>that retarded kid in 5th grade that wanted to make games when he grew up
That retarded kid in 5th grade that wanted to make games when he grew up
Master's student in mathematics.
Ask me anything.
>that retarded kid who dropped out of high school with like 2 months left
>he actually makes games now and that's why they're mostly shit
was it worth it
and why are you browsing Yas Forums
>was it worth it
I really like math and it's a degree that is pretty open ended with many opportunities for good pay, so yes I'd say so and I've enjoyed my time. I'm still debating whether or not to pursue a PhD.
>why are you browsing Yas Forums
Nothing better to do.
>codemonkeys and mathtards thinks you need to know how to code and to do 2+2 to make videogames
lmao at your lifes fags
36 years boomer behind one of the biggest indie teams in the Neatherlands and I only had to pay 2 guys to do what I told them to.
I did 1 year enjoying life, travelling the world, founding a publisher, and now I'm fucking drowning in money.
>can't wait to fire those 2 retards now
Be an entrepreneur with your death sibilings, you retards.
I never worked once in my life and I'm now richer than ever.
Cope.
nice blog grandpa
>tfw going to school for a comp sci degree right now
>tfw have math anxiety, didn't do the best in high school because of depression
>taking a college algebra course right now
>tfw it's mostly pretty easy, just have to remember to stay on top of it before I forget some stuff
God, I hope it keeps being this easy for me.
Most degree plans I've looked at for CS stop math at integral calculus.
As if firing a code monkey means something, they'll be hired somwhere else in less than a week.
CS is a meme, take the EEpill
You literally don't need to know math though. If you're sitting at a fucking computer and NOT using it to figure this shit out for you, you're a fucking retard
You literally do.
Isn't the path of the codemonkey an oversaturated market? Especially with Poojeet and ChingChongKungFlus taking every available commission?
>he fell for the math meme
Cope harder, NERD
yes, you said it yourself, a >codemonkey
a good programmer will have no trouble finding a job
>Still don't know math
>Making video games today
Suck it, every Math teacher I've had since 4th grade.
if you can't do math you'll be a shit programmer, they may be different fields but the same kind of logical mind is needed for both
pixelshit platformers are nothing to be proud of user
Absolutely not, i was receiving job offers before graduating. After graduation i sent 5 CV's, had 3 talks and the next monday i was working.
I had to work with Pajeets and they are a joke, any company that bought development hours from them got burned, i spent 3 month of my life fixing pajeet code and i wanted to kill myself every minute.
Dont' know about chinks, never heard of anybody outsourcing to them
>many opportunities for good pay
Like what?
EstrogEn pill
*blocks your path*
I've never taken a calculus course before so I'm a little nervous. On the other hand, even though math was my worst subject in grade school, I was in gifted actually, and the more I sit down and study math, the more I realize that I mostly grasp what I'm doing and the why I'm doing it, and realize that most of time when I get something wrong, it's because I make a silly mistake or two or I'm just ignorant as to what I'm supposed to be doing.
>tfw you only really wanted to become a video game designer
>tfw even though you still really want to do that, thinking about getting a math minor to work on quantum computers or a master's in aerospace engineering to work in the space industry and become an astronaut either way somehow
I'm going to owe so much fucking money to the man, fucking christ.
can you do my homework for me?
that's not pixelshit, it's hand drawn
seriously though, I don't think I needed math all that much
I just have wolframalpha/MATLAB do the math for me
So how do you manage?
I'm aware of that, which is why I've spent the last year or so prepping myself on programming, math, and learning how to think logically. I think I'm getting it gradually.
Data scientists, cryptologists, market analysts, statisticians, professors, actuaries.
>be that retarded kid in 5th grade that wanted to make games when he grew up
>find out what programming is later on
>find out how shitty working conditions are in the vidya industry
>get a normal software engineer position instead
Tobyfox made a game that sold millions and he doesn't even know how to code.
He can be the guy that writes really complicated-looking equations on movies that the protagonist erases in a eureka moment
Unless you build your own physics engine, most game engines handle all the math for you.
That's making operations, a 5th grader can do that, you're supposed to be the one writing equations
Because someone else did the programming.
how do i stop being shit in my abstract algebra course
That's good to know but I feel like knowing some maths is still good anyway.
What sort of games have you made?
>using the default engine physics
big yikes
Using well studied algorithms isn't really math, contrary to what you're taught in school.
>Actually, I work for
>Implying working for is something to be proud of
As you can see, I have no way of responding to this but I'll laugh @ u for thinking that regardless
300k starting?
any job you want?
most people who work in math but don't chase higher education turn into analysts
American universities do not count
Not him but what is math then?
even better, I use a CAD program for most of my work and the CAD program does all the math for me
In vidya? Absolutely.
Elsewhere? God no.
My team does industrial automation. Think factorio where we make sure machines that make shit do things automatically so idiot operators don't screw things up.
I have a CS minor from a low-priced satellite campus of a kinda prestigious university, and the coding skill requirements are piss easy even for me. A CS student with three semesters could blow this shit out of the water. We have one developer. We are trying to hire two more.
We offer kids straight out of school something like 140% of median HOUSEHOLD income plus absolutely baller benefits that nobody in the area can even come close to and we can't get fucking anyone because they all think they want to work in "pure" code, refuse to write documentation for their own code, or they're completely unqualified to even touch Notepad++.
There is absolutely not a lack of coding jobs out there. If you've got ANY talent at all (AKA: You graduated without cheating a ton in your programming classes) and are willing to move away from the coasts, show up to work on time, sober and bathed with clean clothes on— you can still live like a goddamn prince.
Not at all. There's literally more dev positions available than people able to fill them. I signed a job contract before I was even done with college.
>you only need math if you're making the engine.
Either nodev, pixelshit rpgmaker dev, or 50 team member dev.
I do counseling work with a lot of autistic teens and it's really kind of heartbreaking how many want to work in video games. They really believe they'll be hired as idea guys and don't really have a grasp of the work involved. I know in the back of my head most will just be shunted off to assisted living, or work really low jobs, it crushes me.
In its most basic essence, it's problem solving. Any highschool student in a calculus course can tell that [d/dx]e^x = e^x, but not many, if any, would be able to tell you why that's the case. Figuring out and understanding why is where the math part comes in.
In upper level courses, you'll be asked to prove things that you've never seen before.
Isn't that kind of how programming works then? That sounds kind of daunting honestly.
How is your 300k and starting calary?
What are you struggling with the most? For abstract algebra, it's best to have the definitions down. Be sure that you can come up with examples for the various definitions (rings, groups, mapping, etc.).
Surface integrals.
300k starting.
Jesus christ, just hearing this shit makes me realize I need to git gud and hurry up and finish my degree already. Fuck.
>That autistic socially retarded kid who did a high school/college presentation about videogames
>i dont need math, i'm creative
Yes, in a sense, you can consider CS to be a branch of applied math. Also, I'm not saying that doing rudimentary calculations isn't math, but that's not really what math is about. The problem with lower level university maths is that they're basically tailor made to vomit out all the procedures and algorithms that engineers need for their classes. You don't really start getting into math proper until you take an analysis course and start to see where all these things come from.
>Isn't the path of the codemonkey an oversaturated market?
unlike the idea guy market
Where are you? And how would I find out about this sort of job? Do you post on indeed or things like that, or is completely word of mouth, or do I need to trudge through the entire website of every company in my area? I'm convinced there are no jobs where I live, but maybe I just don't know where to look.
Interesting. How do you feel about the way mathematics is taught in the US from kindergarten and onward?
Kind of, but with a different set of rules. It's more akin to legos where you have to take more care over structural design and doing things in the correct order rather than solving problems, which is still a part of programming regardless.
Most of the difficulty of programming is making stuff that it extensible, easy to understand, and portable/generalized. You can break down any problem into little chunks that make it easier to solve.
Peak second hand embarrassment.
god, are you me? Yours is basically my life story, and we're looking for someone to expand my 3 man team because there is shitloads of work and we can't find someone to even do a try period
He said "move away from coasts" so assume he's american. I have an identical situation and i'm a pastanigger
You need a math to make stuff efficient. For example in animation, if you just say just bound animation to an time in ticks it will end badly if someone play the game long enough, it`s a part of live still executing code, the garbage collector would not get it, it will be there germinate almost forever until you run out of memory.
Have you looked at Indeed, LinkedIn and all that?
