Replaying that game rn. Running around as Sonic is fun, but hampered by boring linear levels. Not long or complex enough. Treasure hunt stages are fun because of the exploration element. Mech stages are trash. A shooter with no aiming. Spam b to win. More annoying is platforming with a clunky turn radius.
So no, the game was intended for children and it shows in the linear press a to win gameplay and completely nonsensical plot. Occasionally shines when the Sonic and shadow stages open up or provide you with some fun platforming. No idea why I loved this game when it came out. Music is good tho.
