Play the mod that adds that fucking swamp dimension. The betweenlands or something

play any version from the minecraft beta before beta 1.8 , or decrease your fov to 60 and download a mod that changes the moonlight from 4 to 0 and any mod that makes the game feel like the beta versions.
As soon as I chopped a tree, I noticed how little I could see because of 60 fov.
The feeling of a creeper actually sneaking up on you became much more appearent.
Not having super gear in matter of minutes also contributed to the feeling of suspense because of how fragile you are.

The Wasteland mod + PR Luminance + Mob Properties + Ambience mod (which essentially allows you to add a custom soundtrack) is a pretty good combo if you get the right songs for it. Maybe throw in a thirst mod + Roguelike Dungeons to make things a bit more challenging.

Dimension Doors is also a good addition, with it's creepy eye-monolith creatures, and it's even more creepy if you fall into the void or die in a pocket dimension, sending you to Purgatory. Prepare for a long walk back home if you manage to escape it, though.
