Not even true for everybody. I reinstalled 2016 right after finishing eternal and started appreciating it more than before. The only thing it made me miss was the dash but if that was implemented in 2016 the whole game would be needed to rebalanced.

Doom Eternal is like: "See those demons. You need this gun for that one. This gun mod for that one. and don't even dare striking out from this pattern. You might get away with it in the earlier levels, but from the middle onwards you are gonna get put under such high pressure that you better buckle the fuck up and play the game exactly the way the demons want it. I mean we the developers intended you to do it."

I've been playing through the game on nightmare and I still haven't figured out where this bullshit came from. The marauders are so far the only enemy I've come across where (ideally) you have to fight them a certain way, but even then you don't have to use the SSG, they're vulnerable to ballista, remote rockets and BFG too. Pretty much everything else I've been able to use whatever the fuck I want on.

eternal's gameplay is a colossal improvement, as it actually goes full force with every new mechanic and idea, making them gel and feed into each other, instead of where glory kills and the chainsaw were kind of optional and gimmicky in 2016
also it's a fuckton faster

2016 is more of an artsy reinterpretation of the setting, with good theming and alright combat
eternal is the greatest single player arena shooter you can imagine, which kinda doesn't care how it presents itself or what it does, except it does it all really really well

Playing through 2016 and I love it. Looking at Eternal gameplay and I’m unsure. Gameplay looks fantastic but the art direction looks like shit. Weapon redesigns look bad. UI looks ugly and features bright, neon colors. Environments offer more variety but most look to take place in broad daylight and the lighting seems less dynamic because of this. Tell me the gameplay is so good I won’t give a shit about any of this.
