You can store them inside or outside, a pretty solution is digging holes and burying 100 turnips in each block.
they spoil after a week so no matter where you store them, next sunday they'll be spoilt, and spoilt turnips attract ants outside.

to catalog you only need to have picked it up at some point, so pick it up then drop it back down again is the respectful way to do it.
