Fates is an alright place to start, but 100% the best place to start for me was Awakening. Three Houses is entirely different from much of the series, so it's also a good starting point; each game deals with different universes save for Awakening and the first game being somewhat connected with the Marth and Chrom lineage.

Give Awakening a try; there's ROMs out there for you to try with Citra, though I'd be patient if I were you since at least for me they tended to be somewhat laggy whenever lots of particle effects were introduced in battle.

If you have $60 to spare though, give Three Houses a chance. Right now I'm playing through both right now as a new FE fan and I'm having way more fun than when I did with Fates.

If you want to get into because Camilla makes your dick hard I guess you could go for it, but keep in mind that Conquest is pretty difficult and not a great entry point for a new player.
Awakening, Fire Emblem(GBA), and Three Houses are all probably better experiences for someone just getting into the series.
