It's a remaster of NieR; Replicant, which was released in the west as Gestalt. This NieR game takes place before Automata in the timeline, the whole timeline of the series takes place in a joke ending from another series called Drakengard.

I take it it's actually a remake and not just a remaster, considering they probably would have actually shown gameplay otherwise right? It's cool they're doing it in any case, personally I'm not that crazy about NieR, either of them, but I still like it enough that I'd play a remake, and I'd be interested to see what changes they might make. Personally I'd like it a lot if they would change Ending B so you actually play as Kaine, it would be more interesting than how they have it currently where it's mostly the same but with some added context from hearing the enemies.

Although I would obviously prefer a remake, the gameplay in NieR really isn't as bad as its made out to be. It's not good enough to carry the game through more than one ending, but it's fine until you start the game over. It's not in depth or anything, but it's weighty and feels good, it's just the lack of variety in what you're actually doing that makes it fall flat seeing as you don't really need to make effective use of Weiss to get by, but again, that doesn't really become an issue until you play too much of it. I'm not saying it has great combat, but it's fine, not as bad as people make it out to be.

I hope the fuckers change the drop rates for eagle eggs and some of the magic words.

Also they have already announced new characters that weren't in the original Nier Replicant so there will probably be some story changes too.

Not him but for me it goes beyond the combat (which is still pretty weak). It's the lack of quality of life pretty much everywhere. e.g. every time you have to go to the Forest of Myth you have to take the warp-boat to the middle of the overworld field, then do the same platforming sequence. To do all the sidequests you have to do a massive amount of grinding, it made me fucking hate the Junk Heap. To have ending C and D on one save file (which I haven't done because I'm not a masochist) you have to replay the game again, for one single choice. The B/C/D routes are repeating the second half over and over again (and the second half already takes a lot of content from the much better first half, which also has its own sidequests that don't repeat). B just adds cutscenes, C/D adds a really easy boss fight. Tediously repetitive, the ending sequence gets burned into your brain. The ending sequence in which the penultimate boss is a reskin of the boar from an early sidequest. There's no scaling at all, so the already easy first playthrough makes way to completely mindless second and third playthroughs where bosses die in a couple seconds. You have to mash through the Forest of Myth VN sections while still remembering the answer to each question (which, as far as I recall, changes every time). There's no chapter select like Automata. The Word system is much more boring than Automata's chips. That's just off the top of my head.

And let's not even talk about fishing.

Honestly Automata was a masochistic grindfest as well if you wanted to be a true completionist. It took around the same number of hours as the original Nier for me to 100% it. The only real distinction is the game doesn't force you to get all the endings.

I do agree that it's lacking in a more general sense, though some of the things you mention I didn't have to worry about because I didn't ever grind for sidequests or anything, I just didn't care to do them, but I was never impressed by the different endings and think they really pale in comparison to Automata's especially, people complain a lot about Ending B in Automata being mostly the same but you play as 9S, but even I was happy with that, as compared to NieR's ending B where I was rushing through the whole thing because it was mostly the same. Still, when I said I don't think the gameplay is as bad as it's made out to be, I mostly meant in the moment to moment mechanics. I remember seeing people saying the game plays like shit for ages before I actually played it, but I was surprised when I played it because most of the time the gameplay is just mediocre. It has some rough parts to it, but I found myself, at the worst of times, just bored by how unengaging the combat is rather than being frustrated by it, and I didn't really get to that point until I was going for Ending B anyway.

I still think the game's gameplay could be improved a lot, both in the combat and outside of it, but I don't think it's shit, it's just not very impressive either. Again though, that's from the perspective of someone who mostly just did the main story and only did the sidequests that didn't seem like too much of an inconvenience.
