proper rpg games have always been adventure games with skill based system that determine the way you solve puzzles.

fallout 1 or planescape are almost like this - their combat mechanics are bare bones

Wish there was a mod for the game that rebalanced it with hard skill checks rather than dice rolling everything.

Game already has passive checks, embrace tabletop random and have fun with losing checks sometimes too. Try to not reload, do not aim to "perfect" completion. I think you will get more fun that way.

There is, it's called save/load. I agree that feeling locked out of content sucks, but the game wants you to embrace failures and come back to junctures later and re-roll after you've developed your character some.

It's good for tabletop sure, because it's filled with dynamic reactivity from everyone involved. Doing that in a videogame is just stupid. I shouldn't have to 'just roll' with being locked out of a path just because of arbitrary number rolls even with different builds and play throughs (not that DE has good branching paths or reactivity to your choices), that just encourages reloading. It's impossible that you fans of the game didn't reload just to see how differently your choices would've went on your next play throughs.

You can see DC on rolling, pick up (average-1) out of two dice rolls and add your modifers. Reload until it will work as you planned to.
This homebrew rule still will lock you out of some content, but if you want to play so, so be it.
Just do not try to lucky roll something you can't outroll by your ruleset.
It can be fun this way.

Why people here are so retarded sometimes? Nothing really stops you from hating commys or other races in the game and ACT like it. There is constant check up un your political views in the dialogues and you can get thought bubles about how capitalism is based, or how white-supremacist you are.

I guess everybody who is triggered by this game just dont like when they're called racist (even tho it is true and they know it).
It is not GOTY, but it is good game with nice naration and relative freedom in your choices.

[Spoiler] The ending was terrible. Having you investigate 3 leads throughout the game and then having it tell you none of that matters, actually its just some mentally ill veteran thats completely irrelevant to everything you did just made me hate the game. [/spoiler] The skills and internal dialogue was innovative. Didn't like the Marxist propaganda throughout the game.

It was really good and I loved it, but it also came out in the same decade as Actual Best RPG of the 2010s, so I'm sorry. It's not.

it is possible, i believe? but there wont be like a "the end" message from the game. hypothetically, if you deplete all possible experience gain sources, and fail the shivers check during search for Ruby, you probably wont be able to finish the game

No way is it the best RPG of the decade, there are way too many strong contenders for that. Best RPG of the decade would probably go to Underrail imo, or at least another great RPG that has more RPG elements to it than DE does.

Good contender for best RPG 2019 though, although ATOM was also pretty good.

Not techincally an RPG, its more so a Visual Novel with optional branches/paths depending on RNG events.

I loved the interview with the writer.
He talks about how people say they "dislike" reading, but for most of the day they're reading.

So he tried his best at writing something that always keeps you invested and it doesn't feel like you're reading a lot. Ex: Politics, this gets players interested, and whacky shit.

It's the one game of recent times I've happily pirated and would never support. Communists don't deserve financial support.

I highly doubt it, I mean, Planescape's story and writing are elder god tier and since Disco Elysium looks like a highly political game with a bias I mentioned, it doesn't seem likely it can be better than PST where different, opposing ideologies are legitimately discussed with their pros and cons rather than trying to force devs' views on players.

I wouldn't consider it much of an RPG
the game is more like those boring DnD sessions where you do nothing but talk for several hours achieving fuck all , it doesn't matter how well written walls of text are if a game is nothing but walls of text with nothing to break it up I would infinitely preffer to pick up a fucking book because its much quicker to get through without having to wait for animations and shit paragraphs

That's a poor understanding of the issue. The issue really seems to be "this game tries to tell me a political ideology which not only I disagree with, but is also an objectively evil, unjust ideology responsible for the death of a 100 million people worldwide, is the good guy ideology that will save the world".

I disagree. Of course there is a large quality gap between main quest writing and side content, but it's due to the main quest writing being so fucking good. But even side writing is great.

Yeah I dropped the game somewhere around 2/3rd because it became too combat focused.
But all iso cRPGs have terrible mechanics really, that's not the appeal of those games.
