There's a point where I said "fuck it, I don't know shit about this type of game" and started Googling cards I wasn't sure if I should take or not. More often than not I learned that the cards that I thought were shit were apparently strong and the ones I thought were good were actually bad. You can try to learn this stuff by yourself of course, but there is always the chance that you never will.

You need some defense.

Consider the following; every card you add to your deck decreases your chance of having the right card for the right situation. Certain cards, like card drawing cards, and cards that let you seek your deck/draw something from discard can mitigate this.

There are also a few relics that give you a bonus for having a big deck, but generally you want your deck to be as small and sleek as possible. In an ideal situation, you always draw exactly as many cards as to give you all the card potential you can have every turn (card draw and balance) along with being able to use them all (combination of energy boosting relics and zero cost cards). Ideally you want to have enough block in any given hand to survive huge attack damage dumps and be able to deal enough damage to keep enemies on progress or else their time out mechanics will catch up to you (decks that kill things very slowly are vulnerable to monsters that fill your deck with shit status effect cards + monsters that get strength over time)

Heavy blade is very solid act 1. Not an immediate pick or anything obviously, but definitely worth taking in a decent number of scenarios.
Even if you don't end up going into strength stuff it's still a good general attack card and pulls it's weight in a lot of early fights just by being efficient. If you're a few floors in and haven't found anything better yet it's an easy early grab
