Not him but what do you think lawyers do? There's loads of different kinds which are radically different jobs. I suspect you don't really know what you're talking about. If you're saying law school is a dangerous investment I would agree and I think it's irresponsible for universities/colleges to be taking as many applicants as they do, but I think as a job it's fairly challenging and technical, though it does vary.

Not American but sadly it doesn't affect me much. I work for insurers so they're all still running and I have to chase experts/witnesses a lot. and as I mentioned targets are exactly the same which is pretty shitty because as you say there's less to do so it's harder to hit them. That's just a shitty firm thing though I think.

We do time recording so if I spend half an hour drafting something I put down that time and that's what our bills are based on. In a 7 hour work day for me 6.8 hours is to be recorded 'billable' time. It's definitely the most common way to do things where I am, though I would say where I work is industrial anyway.

I personally dislike it and think the target is too high. Stuff like actually preparing bills and discussing with colleagues is unrecoverable, so realistically you will need to do more than 7 hours every day, leaving aside going for coffee and other shit.

Here in my country, and more specifically in my particular law office, it has a very "familiar" theme, so they are very lax with keeping tabs on you so long as you deliver results, so my targets are just clearing all work I was assigned to do that week
The problem is that, while people are formally hired to work 40 hour weeks, there are many busy weeks where you'll have to work 60 hours or even 80 to deliver what they are asking for, and you won't get paid any extra for that
So it's less industrial but still very brutal
