So ahead of its time in terms of design and tech
Is anyone else still mind blown that PSP come out in 2004?
Once its true potential was unleashed, it truly was ahead of its time. I still use mine as my main SNES/GBA/GBC/NES emulator.
My dad, who has never liked video games beyond the C64 and Atari, was impressed by the screen quality when it came out. Its library of JRPGs also helped me survive the crushing loneliness of high school. It's the most based portable system in my mind and I wasn't even a piratefag until after the Vita came out.
It was a lovely little machine, I'm still impressed how well a lot of Square Enix's titles on the PSP
>and tech
Literally recycled old PS1 PCBs from the early 90s, just shrunk.
I wish I had one growing up. My uncle had one and I thought it was the coolest shit. I always thought they were more expensive than they actually were. I got a PSP GO but it was a piece of shit and i hated it. Really regret not just getting a 3000.
Also i don't now if anyone else thinks this, but was the PSP the last great old school Sony product. Like Sony used to make really niche/cool shit with a lot of passion. I fell like in 2004, the PSP was one of those last products.
Hell it still holds up today. Playing emualtors on this thing is amazing.
Im so sad I fuckin lost mine.
when will sony release a portable ps2 that uses recycled old ps2 pcbs just shrunk?
*VSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSHHHHHHHHREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESHHHHHVSHHHHHHHHH*
Did anyone one else break their UMDs as a kid thinking you needed to take the disc out?
A beautiful machine with some great games. Shame Sony dropped the ball with the vita.
PS2 came out in 2000, and PSP came out in 2004, which could play essentially what could be considered PS2 quality ports like Tekken 5, Midnight Club 3, Armored Core 3. So yeah, that's pretty mind blowing.
the memory cards were overpriced proprietary crap
Never because they quit handheld business after getting raped by 3DS
Still have and use my launch day PSP, great device
>ahead in tech
What the fuck. It was woefully underpowered for what it tried to be, a full 3D console in your pocket. Not to mention the terrible UMAD optical media format instead of flash memory cards.
I will give you that the PSN integration and the PS3 cross-functionality were brilliant ideas, but of course Sony had to fuck all that because it was just too good for the consumer, right?
nigger it had full fledged GTA games on it
are these still expensive now?
I miss those stupid little discs. PSP was slick as shit. Too bad it didn't have a second analogue. Loved the Vita, too. If only Sony gave more love to its handhelds.
in 2004 i was
Tell me where to get batteries
Yeah, Call of Duty and FIFA too, and they all ran like ass.
I got a microsd adapter for £5 and put a £15 64GB card in. I remember heaving to pay like £100 for 512MB at release
It was like $50 for 256mb of flash storage in 2003
Umd did 900mb single layer and 1.8gb dual layer.
It wasn't until like 2009 where flash was affordable enough to justify moving to flash
There's adapters for micro SD cards, which are stupid cheap
eBay
>loneliness
>high school
the snoypony shows its true colors.
good to know, i got a tax refund coming and i could probably drop 100 bucks to get a decent system with some accessories
But if they're original Sonys, they're probably already dead in the packaging
No you fucking braindead nigger
You finally found something unique about you. Congrats!
Looks like there’s some OEM about. Chink ones probably shouldn’t blow up either
I did
it was literally the most powerfull handheld of it's time.
The fuck are you talking about retard?
I swear to god you fucking newfags should all fucking hang.
He was probably born in 2004 don’t bully
Yes and I'm also impressed that my 1000k from 2005 is still working.
>early days
>able to access the internet on it using the Wipeout exploit
Just charged up my 2000 series, gonna play some rockband and densha de go. Comfy times ahead
psp was basically a portable ps2
while nintendo ds which was released at the same time was basically a ps1
The PSP's library was amazing. It's a shame that the vita never got the same amount of love. I remember playing socom and twisted metal online back around 2006, and it was a blast.
I pretty much just use my vita as a glorified psp since it has native support for ps1 and psp games if hacked.
i cant believe how many Sony IP's havent gotten any love in the PS4 era
The PSP was way closer to a PS1 than a PS2
>PSP
>as a kid
Way to make me feel even older than I already do, jerk
This.
I used to look at so much porn on that browser
Any you bitches played Rengoku 2? That game was lit. Amazing how much they improved the formula after the first (god-awful) Rengoku.
it could also do pictures/music/movies and internet
The fact that it played video was what was mindblowing to me. This was almost a full year before iPods were capable of video, and it was much higher quality than them.
Fuckin miss the XMB. The vita and ps4 interfaces are garbage that have less functionality
Didn't really like the controls, but I wish it got a remaster or remake on the ps3.
Like the PS3 that came out, yes it was impressive technology-wise, but it still had no games until years later
Goddamn the PSP was just so nice. I still use my PSP Go to play GTA or Metal Gear Ac!d. I love my vita too. Use that badboy for lumines and MGS3
I have RE1, RE2 and I, robot on UMD.
Lumines: Electronic Symphony is still my favorite Lumines. (dumb-ass "tap the back screen to build up meter" aside)
Watching advent children on this back in the day was the shit
PSP is the definition of comfy
Based Vitabros
Currently playing Dragon Quest Builders and FFVIII on mine
Why did the PSP fail where the Switch succeeded?
>PSP
>fail
you mean Vita?
They didn't advertise the video out hard enough
What really made the PSP ahead of its time, was that it combined so many functions and was the ultimate travel companion
>Play a ton of great video games
>No need for a PDA/PocketPC/Netbook, you can surf the web on it
>No need for a portable DVD player, tons of movies available on umd
>Could have a limited music library, but in fairness a dedicated MP3 was still better.
>$249 when an ipod nano was the same price
Like i said it truly was a special device
>No need for a portable DVD player, tons of movies available on umd
If you bought a UMD movie you're a special kind of retard
there is nothing wrong with UMD movies, at least for the era
Not really, they made perfect sense before 2009. You have to understand that flash storage was not always cheap like it is now.
Yeah but you're spending more than a real DVD cost for something you can only play on a shit screen. Fuck, I remember they were selling 2 nickelodeon cartoons a disc for more than the whole ass season on DVD cost at one point.
And what else was there to watch movies on that was battery powered? A laptop? A PDA? Those were way more expensive than the PSP and weren't really for gaming.
shouts out to that time I bought a 256mb memory stick for $120
I did it to switch the casing when my cousin gave me broke ones
Portable DVD players were cheap and usually came with dart lighter adapters, because when else are you going to watch a 2 hour movie except when you were in the back of your parent's minivan? And you could actually finish the movie on a screen that wasn't calculator tier when you got to the motel.
Nintendo tax
>be stuck with dialup for the longest time back in the day
>steal neighbor's wifi with the psp
Used to grab the raw video source from early youtube by viewing it's page source info, and I would download the video to my PSP as a flv file. And that's how I watched youtube videos....and saved them as well for portable use.
fucking psp posters
Sorry you've always been poor user
There was supposed to be a third game on PS3 (Rengoku: End of the Century) but it got silently canceled.
