It's at best 1 hour now, and only going to be 4. It's bland and the only good thing it has is its movement is pretty good. Combat is ok but there's nothing interesting to fight. Lots of backtracking in the game so far and still only 1 hour of game.

No, it's literally an adaptation of an actual D&D campaign of 6 Japs. They were publishing their campaign transcript online and it was getting popular so it got turned into a novel and then the novel in turn got turned into the anime OVA.
One of the people in the group quit early so that particular character also gets killed off halfway.

I feel like that requires some explanation in itself. Basically the TV retcons the last half of the OVA because at that time they weren't done with the books so they had to come up with an ending so that viewers wouldn't feel like they got ripped off. So they repurposed some stuff, moved some characters rolls around and we got the ending we got. The TV series picks up after episode 7 or 8 of the OVA and goes more into detail about the actual novel/campain stuff.

It's got a bit of a reputation that's not wholly unwarranted. The animation is way worse and the extra characters aren't really as endearing as the original party. If you want a fantasy anime to watch you could certainly do worse though, especially these days.

The first novel got an actual English release by SevenSeas. It's a good read. Nothing else after that though. Apparently we can bring over every shitty isekai imaginable but not the classics
