Chronicles Of Elyria is officially dead. Crowfall is in infinite development, while not actually developing as a game. New World quietly released with no marketing, to no response.
Give me one reason to be optimistic about the genre.

>Unfortunately, we weren't able to find investors who understood that operating in a cash-lean environment doesn't allow for growth, and stifles velocity. What we did find were several investors who said "Why are you talking with us? If you're confident crowdfunding will sustain you, then you don't need us. And if you're not confident it'll sustain you, then we're not confident enough to invest." For better or worse, we suspected that in order to get an investor, development was going to have to be far enough long that they simply couldn't refuse because we were so close to being done. So our goal for the last year or more has been to push forward as hard and fast as we could, relying solely on crowdfunding, until at least the Alpha 1 was complete. And up until now, we were successful....
>But to our great sadness.... with the failure of Settlers of Elyria, and five long months of only limited crowdfunding revenue coming in, Soulbound Studios has officially run out of money. Last night I was forced to do something I never thought I'd have to do. I closed the online store, put the SoE map back into read-only mode, and laid off all the employees...
Why are you people investing and putting faith in these welfare scams on Kickstarter? It's an immediate red flag that these "devs" promise so much yet have no proven publishing or shipped development record.
oh. well damn, i'm gonna go eat my hat now
8'000'000USD goes poof! They were literally selling in game items until the last moment, too. Not like they just realized earlier that day that they'll shut down.
>sandbox
>classless, skill-based progression
>full-loot PVP
>player-driven economy
>active population
also it's fully released and not some early-access kikestarter scam like Crowfall, Ashes of Creation, and a hundred others.
and why are these features a good thing exactly?
because they're fun
New World is already a flop. You can't just decide at the last minute your game is now a PvE game, Amazon.
dont look that fun to me
>you can do anything!
>oh, wait, you can't do that, your [skillname] level is too low! you've got three options now:
>a) you grind that skill until it's on [ necessary level] which will take 30 hours of [doing a simple but boring task]
>b) buy our skill-up potion, for only $9.99!
>c) enjoy inadequacy like the little bitch you are
>a mmoRPG has leveling up and progression
Yes.
There is no reason to be optimistic. They kill single player games with their server side bullshit and MMO's are even more vulnerable.
Imagine having to get your character better in a mmo.
DFO still exists so I’m set
Yas Forums design an MMO I'll start
You can be a druid who prefers keeping to the wilds and has less to do in towns and cities
>full-loot PVP
AKA getting assraped by gank squads of kids and BRs and getting put back to square one
>everybody has a story to tell! everybody matters!
>except the low-level characters, we don't talk about them
yeah nah im not falling for your bullshit again
>Give me one reason to be optimistic about the genre.
Everyone still plays WoW, FFXI Private servers, Eve Online, Ragnarok Online private servers and Runescape.
Just stick to what works.
New MMOs cant get established because they have no content or playerbase.
Just play XI like everyone else has; you cant say you're a fan of MMOs until you've at least completed Chains of Promathia.
mmos need to be centered around pvp to succeed in the long term (this is a lie because mmofags will eat shit and pretend they like it if it has mmorpg written on it, but lets say its true for the sake of argument). no dev team in the world is able to push out new pve content fast enough to keep players from getting bored of doing the same raid or dungeon over and over. ultimately it starts feeling pointless because, logically, whats the point in spending 3 months farming gear from a raid that you beat wearing gear thats half as good? just to prepare for the next content update thats coming in 6 months? if an mmo is purely about pve and pvp is just an instanced minigame then everything is essentially nothing but inflated numbers without purpose that doesnt affect the gameplay experience besides speeding things up which leads to people getting bored faster/spending less time playing, which is the opposite of what people look for in mmos.
another thing is that it removes the threat of consequence when people act like retards. if ive been killing 5000 mobs in a cave to mine a rare gold ore node with a 0.1% spawn chance, and someone just walks up to it and mines it whilst im killing the last mob that was guarding it then theres nothing i can do about it and he walks away with nothing to worry about.
mmos needs both pve and pvp, but pve should be a means to an end while pvp is the true endgame. pvp allows players a way to generate their own content and it automatically integrates raiding, farming, social interaction and turns it into something way more meaningful and fun if done properly.
1. You create a prisoner in the year 3033, with some background.
2. The police spaceship throws you in some abandoned factory world with the other prisoners.
3. That world is full of rogue robots and machines gone retarded, because the fully automated AI controlled factory was abandoned forever ago, and is now a jail.
4. You kill robots to gather parts, can only hold so many, you meet other people, establish bases.
5. You have basic combat with your dude, but most of the fighting is done with machines you build from your parts, Besiege style.
6. The game features a scripting language, so with more advanced parts you can create robots that play on their own.
7. Permanent death, if you die you create a new prisoner, and every hour there's a ship arriving to drop all players in queue. You may find the robots you build last life roaming somewhere!
8. Basic clans system, basic politics, full PvP unless you have a truce with the other clan, and violence against newly arrived clanless people marks you on the map for everyone.
9. You "win" the game by building a very complicated and expensive spaceship that can help you leave the world. hen you win it is announced to everyone else in global chat, and they can look up to the sky to see you flying off.
>>everybody has a story to tell! everybody matters!
Who are you quoting?
the steam page for the game Albion Online
ARK and Rust showed what an MMORPG should be, but were much smaller scale and very janky.
This.
Modern MMOs have dogshit player interactions, which defeats the purpose of even playing them nowadays.
>mmos needs both pve and pvp, but pve should be a means to an end while pvp is the true endgame.
The opposite makes much more sense. You compete for resources, and you need the resources to progress.
I'm not the Albionfag but it's delusional to think that every newbie character should matter.
What's even the point if you don't have to earn anything?
>1. You create a prisoner in the year 3033, with some background.
>2. The police spaceship throws you in some abandoned factory world with the other prisoners.
>3. That world is full of rogue robots and machines gone retarded, because the fully automated AI controlled factory was abandoned forever ago, and is now a jail.
is this Gothic or Unreal?
MMOs are not popular because people got smartphones. But VR can revive this genre since it's something outside of phones.
Literally zero significant VR MMORPGs.
learn how to read r*tard
You could just all play tortanic and have ERP orgies in my stronghold but noooo you have to be a bunch of faggots
You may not like it, but Star Citizen is already revolutionary
>VR can revive the genre
>even though there is zero hint of any such game coming out
Learn to write, RETARD.
i didn't make the post that you couldn't read
>CAN revive
>as in COULD HAPPEN in the future, no mention of it CURRENTLY happening
>DURRR THEY AREN'T NO MMO VR RIGHT NOW
fuck you moron
You know what else CAN revive the MMORPG genre? Phones. Playstation. The new Facebook console that CAN be released, and after that CAN revive MMORPGs. Valve's brain interfacing. The new technology that aliens that CAN exist CAN leave us and it CAN revive MMORPGs. The new way to run MMORPGs on your toilet hardware that CAN be invented.
Can you stop being a fag and admit fault now?
>Playstation
No :)
isn't the game dead? how's population wise exactly?
but ERP is for faggots and i dont erp
>New World quietly released with no marketing
1) it's been having announcements and vids for the past 2 months almost every 3 days
2) Beta is next month, so as little as 4 days from now
3) Relese is in May
Feel like i'm being meme'd on. But then again, Yas Forums is notorious for having smooth brains
Caspian wrote the whole "into the abyss" article on the main page which is him basically just jacking himself off in an Arthurian tale over how good he WOULD have made the game if it weren't for those shitty backers only giving him 8.5 million dollars. Then he says the shit is cancelled until something else comes up, aka "more money"
bro chill just learn how to read
I know how to read, that post is just wrong and stupid. The person is trying to lawyer their way out of it because, you see, it is TECHNICALLY possible that what the post said can maybe in the future or in a parallel future maybe technically be true, even if there is zero reason to currently believe so.
anyone tried screeps? is it good?
>You know what else CAN revive the MMORPG genre? Phones
I tried the Ragnarok MMO, shit was full of bots on opening fucking day. They basically force you to afk bot. I actually had to fight the controls when i wanted to manually do a quest since the AFK system just has you conga line with other AFKs
CHRIST I remember like 2 or 3 years losing my shit because of the amount of shilling and retards defending this game on /r/mmorpg (yeah yeah).
I'm not your usual anti-crowdfunding but it was so blatantly obvious that this game was never going to get released.
Every video they released was so fucking cringe that I hope they were a scam for money, because if not it's even more depressing.
Ironically enough, r/MMORPG is the only board on reddit i could consider tolerable, they are not swept up by hype and they bash the crowdfunded games, especially Ashes of Creation
Well you see, just because it hasn't revived MMOs yet, and there is no upcoming great MMO, doesn't mean it CAN'T revive them eventually, at a later date, maybe :^)
Yeah but I only went there for the misery and the complete lack of morale in that sub. It's like a rl place you go to exchange punches for no reason.
>it is TECHNICALLY possible that what the post said can maybe in the future or in a parallel future maybe technically be true
right, which is literally the point that post was making
reading involves understanding as well, not just knowing what letters are
