Can we have a comfy half life thread, for discussing all the lore and things about half life, from one up to Alyx, and including portal and other games set in the universe?

JOHN FREEMAN
Deepest lore
I spent so many days pouring over great and terrible multiplayer and singleplayer mods for HL1.
I missed this lil' nigga like you wouldn't believe.
Why is there no Ravenholm (foreshadowing) in Alyx ?
Fucking pussys..
The big room with the crabs at the bottom was pretty damn good.
My nigga
The new ending killed my interest in discussing the lore or story of Half Life.
How scary is alyx at points? Is it ever as scary as Ravenholm? I used to be shit scared of ravenholm when it first came out. I wanna get alyx but I don't have VR and my pc is too shit.
Big question is what is Gmans motive and who is his employer causing him to do the shit he is doing and why?
Post HL3 wishlist
>no fucking radio
>dual wielding (gravgun in one hand, gun in the other. or you just straight up get better russels)
>HEV helmet
Imagine RE:2 but it's in VR. I'll say no more.
Seems like he represents some sort of guerrilla faction waging war against the combine, or there is a being(s) more powerful/influential that we haven't yet seen that he serves.
So what's the best way to replay Half Life in current year?
Should I play with 4:3 resolution or stretch to 16:9? What's your experiences, how do you prefer it?
he's just a neutral actor trying to extract as much cash as possible
his employer is probably big alien
theres a total of maybe like 5 enemies ever at once, so I never really found it scary at all to be honest. they also had to dumb down combat so its not too fast therefore the AI is braindead.
The horror segments look nice because of the lighting though, I'll give it that. Ravenholm was far less scripted which is why it was so good. They really needed larger environments in HL:A. Even just Ravenholm itself is better than the entirety of HL:A level design.
Never played RE:2 lol. I'm not in to scary games that much but I do really like half life as it has the right amount.
He could be from a future alien or human civilization who sent him back to try to change the course of the past because of shit they are dealing with in the future. Sort of like the Terminator universe.
WHAT is the *CASH* though? I can't get my head around what they gain out of it, they don't seem to want to control anything. The combine don't seem to care about him and breen seemed to know of him but wasn't too concerned.
human energy, keep the game going as long as possible
I dunno
What I don't get is that G-Man employs people who are against the combine. People say G-Man is also against the combine...so why did G-Man give the crystal to Black Mesa which started the Xen and Combine to come to earth?
Maybe he didn't foresee the combine coming. Perhaps the nihilanth paid him to open the portal so he and his minions could escape from xen to earth?
Hopefully we never find out since that somewhat diminishes all the mystery of Gman. He's basically just a author insert for Valve, dictating when a game ends because they feel like it.
why did they blackwash alyx
>He did foresee the combine coming
Do you even know Half Life lore? The Gman can control time and space.
So? If he can do that then he doesn't need anyone to do his bidding does he, he obviously needs some sort of agent. And so far it's not really concrete that he is against the combine, maybe he did see it coming and he didn't care.
I was thinking the finale of alyx is both cool and stupid. It's a cool bait and switch but then ultimately makes no sense and it's dumb as shit. What's the purpose of that retcon, how does it make the sequtl to ep 2 more interesting? What is the implied payoff, Gordon Vs alyx? Who gives a shit? Unless we'll play as alyx Vs Gordon then I think Gordon would be a fearsome foe, but fighting alyx as Gordon? Who the fuck cares? How is this going to be interesting?
I tried to not spoil anything in case there are retards here that care about spoilers, not sure what the culture is here right now
G-man works for Valve bro. His role is to incite conflict with the right setting to set up a new Half-Life game.
>Gordon works for valve bro, his role is to be the protagonist and complete objectives to advance the story
>The combine work for valve bro, their role is to oppose the player and provide a context and motivation for completing the objectives.
Well yeah games are retarded I guess when you boil it down.
>ending of HL:3
>valve hq is the final level in the game
>FULLY MODELED gayben talking with g-man behind glass window discussing how they should end the game
>they create an infinite loop within the game and reality breaks
>you get to write the ending yourself
>finally escape the burden of writing a satisfying ending to a 20 year old series
I think it's just stupid, not necessarily because the idea of the ending is inherently stupid but the way they showed it. That's just not the kind of revelation one makes in the last five minutes.
3 doesn't have to nor do I want it to be the ending. I want spin off after spin off. I can't get enough of half life.
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
this
What was mossman's deal in hl2? Why was she working as a quadruple agent? Was it just lazy writing for muh plot twists?
at this point I'd pay for an album comprising of the overwatch voice saying stuff.
I would consider it to be a survival horror for a 1/3 of the time, if not more.
So assuming Half-Life 3 actually comes out, what do you think the main enviroment will be?
The white forest in VR would be kino.
does anyone have the back of the russian newspaper from alyx?
Reminds me of that one mini-series of Red Dwarf with the Joy Squid. It's probably the only way to end the series considering the whole G-Man benefactors thing can't really go anywhere else except Mass Effect or 4th wall.
Here's something that's annoyed me in the ending of Alyx.
Gman shows that he can seemingly stay in that empty space but still manage to affect the future. If that's the case, why did he drop off Gordon in the train at the start of HL2 instead of just opening a few portals. One for Gordon to get the gravity gun, one for him to get the super charged version, and one final one at the top of the Citadel.
I mean his character and dialogue is pretty meta.
Especially talking about how Gordon hasn't been willing to perform.
1. The game had to happen.
2. Limited power, can't just do it willy-nilly like that.
3. As he said, he can only nudge, warping Gordon around like that would be too much of a push.
in the last 2 weeks I played
Black mesa, half life 2, episode 1, episode 2
was comfy
based John Freeman posters
So have I but I'm in the middle of ep2. Just got out the antlion bit and about to get the car. Black Mesa was really fucking good.
I wish they didn't set up the red herring of saving gordon freeman because right away I knew that made 0 sense and thought of the gman
The superweapon setup was fine enough.
>yellow, black, yellow, black...
Eli's hat in HL:A is a throwback to his first iteration from HL2, Eli Maxwell
The bright white sleeves the combinbe soldiers have bug me
Just pretend it never happened
I will only forgive it if they redo Eli's death instead. Just an infinite void of Alyx and Eli making deals with the G-Man to redo episode 2's ending for all eternity
>wants Eli's BBC
>thinks combine are too strong so switches sides to make a deal to save her and Eli
>Breen reneges on deal to save Eli
>She switches sides back to resistance
Too bad HLA was fucking shit.
Over the past couple of days I've been arguing against the ending despite the fact that I know it's a wasted effort. It's not like I can just place myself at Valve before release and fix the ending. But it still pisses me off. If it had been Gordon dying at the end of Ep2 I can understand bringing him back but Eli? Hard to ignore that.
Isn't a lot of Alyx basically the beta version of HL2? I think some of the enemies were also old designs. Either Valve was lazy to create new stuff or they liked the meta joke of a prequel also including old stuff that didn't make it in HL2.
Now that it's been a few days from release and things aren't so heated with spammers and shit, there's been quite a few actually nice hl threads.
Have a thing
youtu.be
I love Olga!
>no fucking radio
You mean Russel? I thought he was alright
Btw, my wishlist is
>Eli is your Alyx style companion, being a cool motherfucker and telling you to fuck his daughter once you get her back
>The G-man is still left ambiguous and mysterious
>More enemy variety, more otherworldly, spooky, fucked up alien designs, maybe use scrapped concepts
>MELEE if I don't smack shit with the crowbar I'll riot
>Bigger arsenal, Op4 tier compared to just three weapons
she looks like she takes transhuman combine cock every night
>actual interesting guns. More AR-2 and rebar crossbow. TAU cannon and energy weapons please
>more alien enemies, more enemies that aren't just soldiers with a smg
>less gravity gun jerking off
>More action packed levels like the last half of HL 2 and Surface Tension.
The problem isn't russel, the problem is half-life is very atmospheric in the sense that there's not meant to be a lot of dialogue between meeting the few people you find along the game. A constant two people talking isn't something I want in a Gordon focused game. Alyx wasn't bad because she was only there some of the time.
>Gordon to speak
I agree on that. Either way, there's no chance Gordon is ever going to talk so I don't think we should worry about that.
