"Realistic", "Relatable" and "Flawed" writing

I fucking despise this trend in recent media (not only video games).
Why do they have to ALWAYS remake/reboot or even sometimes create a character to be some kind of extremely flawed "real human being" instead of just being a fun idealization, a simple character with clear characteristics that is just entertaining?
Bigest culprits of this shit fad:
>reboot Lara
gone is the sexy sassy and cheeky acrobatic badass, now we have a gritty whiny bitch through the whole trilogy, covered in mud and blood because she's "grounded" and "not sexualized" now and this is supposed to be entertaining
>Last of Us 2
first one less extent but in second they literally said they don't use word "fun", it's needleesly gritty, characters are made uglier on purpose, again, covered with mud, scars, fighting like savage "realistic" etc.
>RE3
art director even said that "sexualization" was a bad idea and made her more """realistic""" and "relatable"
What the fuck is up with that. There are many other examples of this shit fad.
Aaron Ehasz (guy who wrote ATLA cartoon), said that characters being:
>likeable
>relatable
>sympathetic
Is bad writing and those are "false gods". Instead characters should be (not necessarily all of those):
>dimensional
>compelling
>fascinating
>believable
Why do new artists, writers, creators etc. hate fun so fucking much. Even new DMC, the series which is the early symbol of over the top fun, went for a more "gritty" and "realistic" art direction.
I fucking hate it.

The flawed angle is usually fun, even if it's being too cocky or egotistical

>I fucking hate it.
I don't blame you, I would to if I was in your situation. That said, nobody here really gives a fuck about your little tantrums.

I have no problem with "realistic writing" but it doesnt work when all your writers are hacks

the writing debate is just a circlejerk for numales

not everyone fell for that gay shit

Maybe you should try reading some books.
Better storytelling will invariably lead to more flawed characters, that's how you create depth and complexity. "Everyone is awesome" is not very interesting.

If you want games to not have stories, or to only have simple throwaway stories, that's one thing, but if you want games to have actual stories, then you're gonna have to deal with it.

There is a problem with it.
It is inherently bad priority to focus on in ANY writing.
By definition all art and medium is stylized. There is no point in replicating realism 1 by 1, because you already have real life.
Good example of this gone wrong is Red Dead Redemption 2 with how many pointless animation and "realistic" gameplay is shoved that is completely unnecessary. Or with Death Stranding and trying to make traversing the world fun.

God it's been a long time since the last Gorgeous Freeman episode came out

>Red Dead Redemption 2 with how many pointless animation and "realistic" gameplay is shoved that is completely unnecessary.
Thats not writing dumbass

Again.
Flaws =/= Depth
Or rather, now "flaw" nowadays doesn't mean simply making mistakes etc. but rather everyone needs to have some gritty backstory, shit situation etc. or some really forced bad characteristics that add nothing to the story.

Videogames are serious bussines, sorry corporations cant appeal to your incel dreams.

One and the other are related with video games.
In this medium it's both making gameplay more realistic as well as writing, art direction, graphcis etc.

>art director even said that "sexualization" was a bad idea and made her more """realistic""" and "relatable"
the old character was literally modeled after a real person
but somehow that isnt realistic enough

Dont care were talking about writing here

There is definitely a big problem with western games taking themselves too seriously.
Even if the game is supposedly "silly" or "not serious", under all that superficial facade, it actually is really serious.
Good examples are Outer Worlds and Borderlands 3. Both present themselves as wacky and distanced stories/games but in reality they have, for example, a serious political agenda behind (among other things), like "fuck capitalism" or something.

Oh boy, the autist is trying to categorize writing without the education to do it. I hope he doesn't hurt himself.

Eternal's writing is the only bad part about it, though. 2016 was perfect in this regard because almost all cutscenes are from Doomguy's point if view, so you see his personality through small actions like backing up VEGA or trashing the filters Hayden tells him to be careful with. Eternal cuts a lot of that out and instead opts for characters like Betrayer and Novik who only show up for one scene each, yet were marketed as playing bigger roles.

Hack Hollywood washouts can only write with Oscarbait tropes in a desperate attempt to seem more mature than they are.

>i need a retarded pointless education in writing to spew buzzwords that mean nothing to ever be able to discuss writing in any medium i like
go back to plebbit

> to be some kind of extremely flawed "real human being" instead of just being a fun idealization, a simple character with clear characteristics that is just entertaining?
Umm sweetie maybe because the industry actually grew up and is now for decent human beings instead of juvenile incels and their power fantasies.

You should try growing up sometime, too.

The kind of character writing you're complaining about works in a compatible story. Something like Red Dead Redemption, they're trying to make a more "realistic" game - one that's slower, with more detail in the environment and mechanics, and a serious story. Having such a character works in this environment, unless you're saying that video games aren't ever allowed to have serious stories.

All the people harping on story forget there are plenty of games where the story doesn't mean dick.

Mario, any fighting, racing or puzzle game. Even BotW. The story was minimal as hell, dripfed, and completely avoidable. DMC or Bayonetta, or Portal. Sure they've got stories, but that's not why people play them. Simulators and the like, designer games.

It's the gameplay. It should be engaging and captivating to the marketed demographic. I like my games to be colorful and flashy with cool designs and wild setpieces. I can't tell you coherently what the plot of Bayonetta is, but I can talk about the stages, the art design and engaging enemy encounters. And none of them are very realistic.

For some reason, people feel like "if it's too unrealistic, it's childish." Yeah okay. As close as you try to get to realism, the more little details will fall through the cracks

Yas Forums was pretty liberal back then desu

Why does this retard bother to reply

You don't like flawed characters because you're flawed, which is why you want perfect little beings to self insert as, kill yourself you flawed nigger faggot

Why cant these self inserts just imagine themselves being in that setting instead of self inserting

Because they'd be a failure inside the setting too

Attached: 1567468687151.jpg (332x152, 8.13K)

instead of self inserting themselves into a character*

Its never flawed though, its puddle deep characterization, which is never a limiting factor for growth or something to overcome

YAAAAAAAAASSSSS QUEENSLAYER SO BADASS AND EPIC I'M GONNA MAKE A WHOLE SUBREDDIT TO WORSHIP YOUR COCK

Attached: 1580277918132.jpg (219x248, 20.82K)

Shhh you're going to trigger the revisionists and tourists.

I find it weird how they cant just imagine a stronger, more coolerand based version of themselves in that setting.

People say this, but I don't think that's true either - Yas Forums just didn't have a prominent ideological bent like it does now. There were always those who hated nonwhites and seethed over women, but then there were a lot of people who used the term "stormniggers" and talked about wanting to be the little girl by putting on a skirt too. The mix of varying forms of autism didn't focus us into some asinine left-vs-right dichotomy, where closing pools was done for lulz rather than to own the libs.

This is something that always bothered me to be honest.
Lara is waved around as this ultimate symbol of sexualization or objectification of women but yet i fail to see one example in any game where that is true. They say she is a pair of tits or that she is too sexy or something. But:
>she is independent, has no sidekick guy to help her etc. (unlike nuLara)
>handles herself pretty well, kicks ass (unlike nuLara)
>is confident and skilled, nobody doubts her ability and all the men in the lore are fascinated by her (unlike nuLara)
>has very good education and is smart
And she is a sexy flexible acrobatic while doing all that. Seems like a perfect power fantasy for women for me. Yet they keep bitching about her constantly. And it's always just that she is some sexy doll, as if in the game her personality is being some dumb bimbo, which is the opposite of truth.
Really makes me think that those people never actually played any Tomb Raider game.

They opposed bush and evangelical social puritanism, not transgender niggers of color using the womans bathroom

>Really makes me think that those people never actually played any Tomb Raider game.
This is all you needed to post, really.

You don't understand anything, do you?
Flawed characters aren't inherently bad. But a character being "flawed' is inherently bad writing. When you try to write a "deep" or "relatable" personality too hard, you achieve the opposite.
Good example is Death Note by Netflix. They redone Light and L to make them "relatable flawed teengagers" and yet they became less likeable and entertaining (and impossible to root for) than their original, psycho/sociopathic counterparts.
What's up with that?

Yeah i dont get it either. You dont see faggots bitching about Chad main characters in games.

Because they don't have any creative potential to do so, they're absolutely brain dead, just take a look at Yas Forums and see all the wojak posting, they don't have any creativity to do it anymore

Because most people find real life and human nature interesting enough that they don't need escapism to cope with their existence

You can still enjoy your cartoons and fruit cereal but don't expect actual adults to find enjoyment in toddler entertaiment

This is a good point, its never an aspect of growth or characterization, theyre just less likable perfect people who save the world

>”flawed” characters is a recent trend, not only in video games
nigger are you shitting me, flawed characters have been a mainstay in fiction since forever
there were flawed characters in the Bible, ducks gilgamesh was flawed
This fucking board I swear

Have you ever been to Yas Forums?

Uhh, your sky daddy doesnt understand what it means to be a multi personality furson tri-poly sexual dismorphic, shitlord

Haha I love Marvelquipguy
Rip n tear, fellow Doomers!

>You dont see faggots bitching about Chad main characters in games.
False Equivalency. Those are male power fantasies you piece of shit.

>And it's always just that she is some sexy doll
These betas are hypocritical chauvinists who think that all attractive women are stupid bimbos who need to be put in their place and be forced to cover their whore body, but hide behind the idea that it's actually helping women.
>those people never actually played any Tomb Raider game
They don't play any games period

Old Yas Forums wasnt obsessed with trannies, either.

Your point being?

You are retarded.
Those characters are not "flawed", they are dimensional.
"Flawed" writing is when people on purpose attach some shitty traits to a character for a false sense of depth.
Good example is in reboot Lara where she goes through absolute torture to survive. Get's impaled, beaten up, falls off a cliff and so on.
It's all superficial done to make a false sense of complexity to the character because this time she has to "struggle".
Characters in Bible and many mythos are flawed because of their actions and making genuine mistakes not some forced traits by writers.
Still there is nothing wrong with characters having flaws or making mistakes.
The problem is that hacks think that "flawed = depth" or "flaws = good writing" when it is simply not true.
Jesus Christ has literally no flaws and you wouldn't say his character is boring or not entertaining or anything.
I already imagine early would-be-Christians going "lmao what is this shit writing, he is too perfect, give him some flaws".

And how a character like old Lara Croft is not a power fantasy for women?
There is literally not a single situation in old games where she relies on a man or something. Quite the opposite actually.

You just said theyre flawed you dumbass

>jesus
>not boring
Neck yourself jew follower

lol, what a faggot

Jews absolutely hate jesus and the bible you mouthbreathing retard.

Even a simplistically written character can be interpreted through a heroic or idealistic lens. Realistic human emotion and depth could improve that character, but adding one-dimensional "flaws" actually breaks any sense of heroic or mythic narrative without adding anything in return. It's like the feeling of post-coital regret with a $20 hooker--you've superficially gained but in fact you've really given away something much more fundamental and core.

Jews hating each other? nice, now neck yourself kike

I know you're fucking around, but apparently "Growing up" is moving away from "Juvenile incel power fantasies" and going straight to "Permanently hostile angry white women power fantasies"
So I don't really see what's so different about it.

Attached: 1368301995352.jpg (600x576, 145.27K)

That’s hot tho. The juxtaposition of something cute with the bulging biceps

It's literally just ugly lazy bitches that are mad they will never be like Lara.
When men see an idealized image of a man, they strive to be like him.
When women see an idealized image of a woman, they feel threatened and will do everything to tear that idol down.
This is why when women are in charge, so many female characters are made ugly and "imperfect", because they need to feel better about themselves.
It's even visible in real life acting/casting.
Witcher Netflix is perfect example of that. Geralt was casted by the biggest muscular Chad in Hollywood right now. Meanwhile main love interests from the books, who are supposed to be beauties are now two ugly mutts.

Faggot

>how a character like old Lara Croft is not a power fantasy for women?
because she was created by men solely for being titillating for the player, presumably straight white men. She's not wearing booty shorts because she's confident in her body and wants to explore her sexuality, she has no agency. There's no reason why she couldn't have all the characteristics of a 'female power fantasy', while at the same time being an ugly sloth. And if you're going to tell me that somehow being amazing jerk off material is female empowerment..than just yikes.

Because usually in media, showing a character has flaws, can make mistakes and be wrong with their choices, makes it for the players to sympathize with it more, but video games lend themselves to be fantasy spaces where you can go beyond the established rules so I don’t get why writers and developers overuse this resource

SFM videos are fucking cringe and so is Onions Life

Yas Forums has changed over the years but not all that much. The only significant thing is that the userbase is older on average.

The problems that particular ""women"" have with fictional entities like Lara Croft in video-games as an example (or any other entertainment medium) is that female characters in that genre are in comparison are more refined than the so-called "true", "genuine" or "real" women can possibly be, due to the nature or traits that the fictional character demonstrates and real women literally feel attacked or threatened by something that is created to be more "beautiful", "intelligent" or "sexy" than they are in the real world. Which is why there's a trend to censor and restrict what can or cannot be acceptable in regards to how women can be depicted because in the end they can't compete.

>PTSD induced retard who only kills because his brain can't function properly anymore

Really ruined it for me desu, he's probably just on autopilot mode, not an actual eternally angry crusader who relishes the bloodshed.

>older on average
hahah no.

Obviously. Still hot
