What the fuck is it actually going to do for game design?
PS5 SSD

well you don't have to design built-in loading sections anymore so the transition between levels will be smoother, right off the top of my head. i'm sure there's plenty of things less loading time allows a developer to do.
Faster cut-scenes
No more loading elevator/hallway/shimmy through crevice.
Fast travel that is actually fast.
Higher % of RAM can be utilized effectively: Before everything that could appear on screen in the next 30sec-1min needed to be loaded in.
Now things can be loaded in 1-2 sec before its needed instead.
i.e. less RAM filled up with stuff that might never actually appear on screen.
He went over it pretty thoroughly in the presentation.
You could also check out digital foundry showing off some of star citizens tech which requires SSD to work (they do a test without a SSD and its terrible).
Make game design that won't even be possible on Series X and PC
Have fun with your extra teraflop that has a few extra pixels of shiny while still have game design stuck the same way it has been for the past 20 years
>Make game design that won't even be possible on Series X and PC
Like?
welcome to 2011
this just means developers are going to abuse loading screens even more
like 10GB of RAM is being used for what you see in front of you instead of you instead of shit that's behind you and a mile away
Load shit way faster which will result in less loading screens in general and faster loading when there are loading screens.
>showing off some of star citizens tech which requires SSD to work
yeah, i bet processing all those donations requires a lot of I/O
fighting games that dont take over two minutes to get into a fight
like 10GB of RAM is being used for what you see in front of you instead of shit that's behind you and a mile away (because with slow storage you have to make sure you have data you will need in like 20 seconds already loaded in the ram so that you have the data when you need it)
other advantage is of course fast loading screens
absolutely nothing except for a handful of exclusives getting big levels, considering everyone else has SSDs that are only slightly slower
Getting us closer to getting rid of the Von-Neumann bottleneck.
continue to struggle to catch up to pc?
Load them 4K cutscenes faster
literally nothing
Okay, but literally none of these require some revolutionary expensive SSD. It would all work just fine with just any cheap NVME drive or even a SATA 3 one.
really, really, really, really shiny movies
checkmate Xboners
Why don't they just install the CPU into the SSD so the entire SSD can act like cache memory?
I hope they attain the "simple as Netflix" part of launching a game. Hitting start and being right into the main menu, or having main menus themselves redone because you can just load people into gameplay from PS5 menu UI within seconds would be a game changer for consoles.
They won't, loading will still be a thing, and this hard drive won't change that.
If there's anything the previous generations of consoles have taught me is that none of this crap is going to get put to proper use and devs are just going to leave their games further unoptimized and uncompressed because the systems can just handle it now.
Another thing is that you can minimize filesize bloat by not having redundant data that would have been needed to minimze load times. That kind of shit has been a thing since optical media became prevalent and kind of stuck b/c of slow-ass HDD and SD cards.
Slightly faster loading screens
Less elevators and empty halls mostly.
nothing because ssd doesn't mean shit and won't for a long while. sony might have faster loading times but it's going to get butchered by the xbox in graphics. sony fucked up big time hence the last minute variable overclock.
you can actually get that 60fps since loads shouldn't stutter.
Oh wait that's asking for to much.
remember those long loading screens on all you PS1, PS2, and PS3 games? gone
This right here. There will be almost no functional difference from 2gb/sec compared to 100g/sec especially if we are talking strictly gaming
load the cutscene a couple seconds faster
How did he get away with it? How could he say, live on youtube, placing an ssd in console is impossible?
Then he talks about how they actually did it, like they invented the ssd.
How far away from reality is sony? They finally entered 2011
Does anyone really need to load 5 gb data in a second lole?
imagine the shitstorm when those SSDs using a substantial part of it as a cache to appear faster start failing
>just buy a new PS5 bro
sony niggers are retarded
it makes pckeks buttmad because they think their shit slow ssd storing games designed to work with the slowest hdd is better even though it's being bottlenecked in a thousand different ways before the data ends up where it needs to be on that shitty computer
Entire gameworld is essentially one large level
Zero restrictions on movement, even if you make like a zonic or a flying character you can load new environments fast enough. = fast characters, more games with mounts or special abilities for speed
No fog or large objects to hide things that require time to load
More detailed textures
More unique npcs with unique animations on screen
Player abilities are limitless, you can have environment altering skills. eg destroy a city at once, change the look of the area instantly.
The same thing the Cell Processor did for game design.
this is the opposite of cell because cell made everything harder for the devs and this makes everything easier
These two are pretty good.
optane drives already exist, but they're extremely niche in the PC market as it is.
I just hope the console isn't loud and noisy.
Even if the PS5 is slightly weaker than the Xbox Series X, it will still be much more powerful than the PS4 anyway and that is what matters.
>sata 3
no
Did anyone commenting actually watch cernys presentation?
>I wish this thing he directly addresses in length doesn't happen
>fighting games that dont take over two minutes to get into a fight
This was done on the Dreamcast because of the massive cache memory. The majority of fighting games either had no load times or extremely limited load times of about 5-10 seconds. Even on data heavy games like Soul Calibur and Project Justice.
No more Metroid elevators
sure bro
sony wont just put in a rinky dink laptop fan like they did for the PS4
>Even if the PS5 is slightly weaker than the Xbox Series X
May be a bit more than slightly, especially considering every dev is probably gonna use ray tracing too, so gg thermals, performance, and resolution.
It makes absolutely nothing easier. Literally no aspect of game development is made easier by the addition of a SSD to the console. It's pure marketing fluff. It's nicer for the end-user and that is it, that's the only benefit, slightly faster loading.
My msata in my 2016 laptop pushes over 20gb/s
>Literally no aspect of game development is made easier by the addition of a SSD to the console.
spoken like a true mt. stupid.
Nothing, because it's a meaningless buzzword.
SSD are faster, but not "5.5GB/s" faster. The hardware (the drive) isn't the fucking reason.
>>Make game design that won't even be possible on Series X and PC
He asked you why, retard, not what. Try to contain your consolewarrior brain damage.
ah yes insight from the person who has no knowledge over what he aims to give insight about
Falling through the floor while your ships flails about wildly needs a lot of memory.
msata uses the sata interface, it's not faster than 6gb/s
>Congratulations, your PS5 is now read-only
Try to prove me wrong shit for brains, or just continue to choke on that Sony marketing cock. Doesn't matter to me which, you'll look stupid either way.
1. ssd was the most requested feature by game developers
2. asset streaming has to be designed around the limitations of the hardware, you need to ensure you have access to the data you need when you need it
Why are you even replying.
>to choke on that Sony marketing cock
m8, i've been using an SSD since sony and console kids were shitting on them.
AAA engines absolutely benefit from SSDs, even shitty 3d indie games do.
Asset streaming was bottlenecked to hell on old consoles due to shit I/O.
I have no idea why people like you feel the need to make Mt. Stupid posts like you do.
More DLC. Alpha digital deluxe DLC upgrade 10 dollars. Beta 1.0 digital deluxe upgrade DLC another 10 dollars. Beta 2.0 digital deluxe upgrade DLC another 10 dollars. Final upgrade digital deluxe DLC another 10 dollars. Complete ultimate upgrade DLC 10 dollars.
urm hello retard?
Right now in video games everything the player will ever interact with within the next 20 seconds is already loaded in the ram. Even things you aren't currently interacting with.
With the PS5s SSD it is fast enough to drop most of what you aren't interacting with from RAM and then just load it in when you turn around or similar. This means there is a lot more space in RAM for higher quality assets.
They went from 8GB to 16GB as well which means that not only is there space for way higher quality assets, there is also space for a lot more BVH data than on Xbox. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.
No more stupid hidden loading screens like elevators or squeezing through a gap I guess
pckeks saying why do you need an ssd when games work with hdd just fine are like if you said why do you need internal storage because gta san andreas streams straight from the disc just fine on ps2
