Multitude of issues.
>Many sockets typically aren't grounded, which can lead to typically bad shocks. These are those kinda sockets that are only live and neutral, with no ground socket to speak of. This means that if the electronic fucks up, you're basically toast if you touch live.
>The plug's design makes it so that it touches across both live and neutral when the prongs are exposed on both ends, meaning that if you have small fingers you can jam them in there, short the prongs and get a nasty 120v shock, so pray to whatever higher god you believe in if that happens.

All sockets have a ground(provided the installer put them in right). I honestly cannot say the last time I've seen an ungrounded socket.
They are, however, usually upside down so that if the plug comes loose it's easier for the live prongs to be exposed in a way they can be arced. But again, that's installation. Recessing the socket would be an improvement in regard to that though.
