Nook Miles Tickets pay for themselves desu. There's also the chance you get to visit a fish island where it's raining and it's a 3-level island with river outlets on each side.

Barreleye is year-round as far as I'm aware, you have all the time in the world for it.
But they're about the size of horse mackerels, at night. I usually found them throwing bait off the pier, but I do believe that they're not pier-exclusive.
Try a boot instead. I dropped one and I saw like 5 within just a couple minutes.

i got the stringfish and sturgeon back-to-back tonight on a nook miles trip
was a foreign fruit island with two levels
stringfish in a pond on the 2nd level
sturgeon in the ocean just outside the river mouth, swimming just into the mouth
pretty lucky as I haven't seen any other kinds of rare fish or bugs, but these are the two you need to get before March is over

Apparently if you have terraforming you can force spawn them by removing all water except for the river mouths. I don't TT so I haven't tried it though.

Quite a few of the animal and insect names are non-standard or just plain wrong. They're either ignorant, Translating Japanese ignorance, something gets lost in translation, or the names are just stuck from previous games and it'd be weird to change them now.
