I despise the checkpoint save system. I wander around a level looking for secrets, get bored, quit for the evening, come back only to realize all the fucking secrets I found are locked again. What fucking moron thought this was a good idea.

Idk because it was my first time playing it. I also used quicksaves which was a big mistake, i did this doom 1 playthru without quicksaves and it was way more fun, even thou i had to start from the beginning of the mission a lot

Same the checkpoints really cheesed me off, i would die and then have to pick up all the secrets again, thats probably the main reason i stopped playing it. That and the warframe style "challenges"

Why? The game was designed to only be pistol start from the beginning of every chapter.
The entire game was designed to be pistol started. That's why there's weapon pickups all over instead of just ammo pickups. This is also why you lose all your weapons when you die.

Have you picked up doom 64 on steam? It's really good. I've played doom 1 and 2 countless times, and done plutonia, scythe, memento mori, alien vendetta, and plutonia 2, but I had never played 64. It's fucking great. Small levels, weird creepy soundtrack, and new enemy art. The shotgun is fucking great too. You gotta play it!
I absolutely did not do 100%, some of the levels i was running out of ammo even without trying to kill every monster. Also i dont know where all the secrets are. I was just trying to get to the end any way i could.
Im not looking forward to doing that one level of doom 2 where you have to balance on a bunch of super thin ledges above poison pits without quicksaves
Plutonia wasn't made by id either. The entirety of Final Doom were fan megawads.
Plutonia team was commissioned from the start to do the an official release though. TNT was added on the last second.

I haven't played the others. It's a really good port on steam and it's 5 bucks. The others might be good too I dont know.
Because in addition to what said, it is a lot of fun and adds a new layer of gameplay. Instead of just ramming thru from the get-go with your big weapons you have to plan out your route so you can get to the first shotgun shell box or berserk pack. It is really different from playing normally and more fun since it makes you really learn the maps. And also how to punch out demons without getting hit. Some of the maps are a lot harder playing like this, like the big hand map
You should turn the brightness down, Doom 64's atmosphere is ruined by such high brightness.
Well this new version is an updated Doom 64 EX made by the same guy, Kaiser. Also it comes with a brand new episode.

the chasm wasnt too bad for me, it was mainly just that pinkie room that fucked me up so much i had to get the berserk pack from the dark area after the red platforms and got lucky with lost souls

Sometimes you dont and you just have to dodge monsters and only kill stuff that is really threatening. Berserk pack or chainsaw are godsends. You can also try to manipulate monsters into hitting each other and killing each other off. But usually by the end of the map you would have enough ammo to go back and kill everything if you wanted to
It's literally EX but updated. 'Extra features' that weren't authentic were removed for, well, authenticity, ie mouse aiming and jumping.

Again i dont know where any of the secrets are and never ran around spamming use on random walls but i still got thru. The only secrets i found were the more obvious kind where you just get them from exploring. There was only one level where i had to look up a secret in order to get past the beginning: E2M5, since you get spammed with a bunch of imps in a small room right at the start but a nearby secret has shotgun shell boxes

They didn't but NRFTL is literally the best retail Doom after Plutonia. Its an amazing episode and doesn't contain a single bad level bar the last level because i despise the generic boss level with cyberdemon plus fodder or IoC.

Doom 2 at least fixes this with how busted the SSG is and it constantly giving you shotgun ammo

I'm playing doom 2016 on ps4 after playing it on pc on release. Is the console version easier? I don't remember it being so easy on ultra violence
I just finished the Lost levels. I enjoyed most of it 9/10. I only disliked some forgettable switch that opens something really far or small that i didn't notice for like 5-10 minutes of being an idiot. That and the Mother boss is complete dog shit. 4x Revenant missiles that track you and its pretty much impossible to fight her. You literally A. upgraded the makyr which you cannot do from pistol start and melt her in 2 seconds with no challenge well also locking her enemy spawns or B. beat up the enemies and then stand next to her and double/triple BFG her before she can DPS you down.
I don't understand how they expect you to dodge her you cannot even use cover she just kept attacking i had to be shown you can just BFG her since i was pistol starting.

Your ammo management must be bad. Stop using big boy ammo on grunts and use berserk to smash pinkies who aren't worth your ammo. The only justifiable map to run low/out of ammo on on UV D1 is E4M1 because the only way to kill all the Barons is to basically use the wall and lure them all over for splash damage.
i remember nightmare being easier for me then UV, but now trying to go back to ps4 after PC i cant even hit imps now

How do beat Mother Demon without BFG/Unmaker spam: strafe running. Strafe running makes you faster than her homing rockets. Lead the rockets into a wall or something, get a few SSG or Rockets shots, and keep strafe running.

It's rather dull going around holding M1 to kill imps and pinkies with the wimpy pistol and then having to kite them with the unsatisfying fists. Feels more like a waste of time rather than engaging gameplay, or even tense gameplay, just tedious really.
Its sorta rough console faggot here. Im surprised people are going above UV. UV is giving me alot of trouble i wish there was a way to quick swap without the weapon wheel on console with how fast the game is that shit feels so fucking god damn awkward and you can trip up well doing it. Ill definitely get used to it but its definitely a game that i wish i had a functional PC to play M+KB seems even more optimal then Doom 1/2 by miles for Eternal.

I tried this before learning to just BFG its dumb ass. Every time eventually it would go right and i don't understand how it could change same strafe same timing but then a homing rocket would decide it wanted to be a piece of shit. I don't know man its just a shit boss anyways. Cannot even mix it into normal enemies if you wanted it just throws dumb shit in 3 directions at you on repeat. But atleast its not a fucking icon of sin.

What? Almost every level in retail Doom and alot of community maps feels perfectly balanced to be pistol started. Hell D1/2 maps have so much fucking ammo. The only gripe i have with Doom 2 vanilla is how many maps are shit and pistol starting them is mad more boring/shit by how few of them have SSGs.
user i dunno this is a 25 year plus game look at some runs of any level you're being shit at from pistol start let alone going in with ammo/previous level guns. Watch how they take care of each room and learn. Its not like a fighting game or some shit there is no nuance to it.

Its not even hard. Doom 1 has like 3 hard levels on UV and they are the same levels that would annoy you anyways E4M1/2/6. Anything else is easy as fuck. Doom 2 pistol start is only annoying because it makes the shitty 1/3rd or so of the game even worse because it can take longer thats all none of the levels are really made harder by it besides maybe map 29.
I've been playing through Doom 1 UV on GZDoom, only switching to Chocolate Doom on episode 3 and I'm not sure if this chapter is particularly harder or if the lack of mouselook is throwing me off. Also not pistol starting, but I can see how that would've made the first two episodes more difficult since they were a cakewalk on UV.
E3M4 was the only one i had a slight problem with pistol start, E1 is probably the hardest just because its 99% hitscanners
