Both. Left has more content (two and a half games), Right has more quality. If it's your first time with the series, I'd suggest getting X/X-2 first.

it tells me to go to a mine in an area with some dumb name, I walked back and forth multiple times, but there's nothing in there other than a high level cave, and another unreachable cave in a portion of the map which I can see, but cannot reach.

If you like story and more traditional final fantasy go with 10.
If you like other jrpgs and more traditional fantasy setting, immersion and game play go with 12.

If you get X, don't bother with the post game. The monster arena is a huge waste of time and dark aeon fights are bullshit.

Oh, its henne mines to rescue mjrn. You go into phase one shaft from Ozmone Plains and go down and around, using the switches in the junctions to switch which color doors are open.

The PC port has buttons you can press to speed up the game + turn off encounters, really helps through the boring parts

The background lore is that Mjrn entered through phase shaft 2 in the feywood but a powerful mist fell on the mines shortly after she entered, causing powerful monsters to spawn in phase 2 and an earthquake to destroy the path deeper into the mines.

I like both but if I had to choose one I would say 12. It has more content overall. Keep in mind though that with FF 10 you will also get FF 10-2. I personally didnt like it that much but it was still okay. If you have the money just get both.
