dev cycle too long
then pumped it out right at the end because alyx was coming out

Making a casual version of an already easy game.

You'd think it was the resonance cascade, but it was actually the microwave casserole.

Nothing

It was bretty good

Nothing, they set out an ambitious goal and achieved it.

They had been working on Xen for the longest time. The beta testing lasted months. They hardly "pumped it out"

so what's the story behind xen? why didn't they just remaster the existing section and instead made something completely new?

Because the "Xen was bad" has been memed out of all proportion

because everyone hated Xen as it was in og half life, even valve admitted they kinda shat it out

I happen to like both versions of Xen. You could perceive original as rushed, but to me as a kid it was a magical alien world. I wasn't offended by it being rather lifeless.

That's because you were a kid.

Nothing?

nothing
it was great?

Game's bretty gud tbf

gay running animations they added after the initial release

Xen was great for like the first hour, but once you get to that retarded factory part where it's just platforming and puzzle after puzzle, it's just not fun. The weird factory segment also just looked dull. The first part of Xen was great though, with the HEV zombies in the failed scientist camp. Shoulda been more of that.

Gordon put a wierd ass crystal in the anti-spectrometer thingy.

The factory part could definitly have been less conveyor belts. I enjoyed the moments where you actually sneak into the mechanisms beyond the walls. Personally I found the laser-puzzle on the cargo also a nice touch.
The elevator was top tier kino, great buildup to the final boss.

The factory part was the best.

The initial part was like ooh pretty but there was no gameplay, just walk forward and admire scenery and occasionally kill a really low lvl enemy like a zombie or barnacle, or worse one of those harmless energy drainer turret things with a restoration crystal right after it. I just spammed hivehand 99% of the time and it took care of everything. After coming from fighting soldiers and alien grunts with grenades and rockets and stuff it was very boring.

The gonarch part was just aids aside from the actual fight. Lame fire puzzles and lame escape sequence

The factory had decent platforming (better than residue processing at least) and the sections with infinite gluon gun were awesome. The elevator segment at the end was the best part of the game.

clowns are asking money for this shitty mod that took them nearly 20 years to make.
it only gets overshadowed by the even bigger failure that is Half-Life Alyx

The auto crouchjump setting

The guy who designed the first map of Interloper in the original hl should be shot.

that's just nostalgia, i remember liking a lot of shitty games.

Xen was bad enough that Gabe Newell lists it as his main disappointment with Half-Life

Gameplay is terrible compared to the original. A lot of guns feel very weak in comparison, and the AI is significantly worse.

Gabe Newell also thought Steam Machines are gonna be a thing, that Artifact is a good product, and he still thinks VR is the future of gaming.

What's his endgame?

That's what gets me, people keep talking about how pretty it is, but the actual gunplay is shit. It's worse than HL2's gunplay, and doesn't even have a gravgun to compensate.

Source

Almost nothing.
I did find that factory a bit too long though.

I kinda missed that open air with manta rays cruising above though

The guy behind whole Xen is Brett Johnson, apparently. brettjdesign.com/

obtaining soul ownership of wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nothing. And the new Xen is the best environment design in the history of videogames.

too bad this came out before alyx. i would've liked some xen greanade plants to allow you to use a weapon other than the gluon gun all the time.

Too many big fishes under water
Hate that shit

>anime sounding HECU grunts
>retardedly over the top final boss
>ear rape alien controllers
>no old VOX

Black Mesa’s gets and worse worse the more you progress, the part in the vortigaunt village is interesting but then in the fortress kind of thing its lame and unoriginal.

The voice was my main problem with it
Another thing that came close was the ammo. I liked have 50 rounds in the mp5 and the higher ammo reserves. It just felt boring without being able to spray ammo everywhere.

Black Mesa’s xen I meant

It's an unnecessary remake
HL1 is perfectly playable to this day and aged far better than HL2

Fuck off contrarian loser

I have a crossbow

They didn't take a critical eye to the things that HL2 did that were boring/tedious/unwelcome and ported them over to hl1 themed maps and thought it was good design. It wasn't, it was a huge mistake and the pacing sucks cock. The music is terrible too and sounds distinctly not half-life.

>What went wrong?
Half life was never good, and rode on the highs of good graphics and physics engine.

Xen is nice in the first hour but when you get to the factory i was tired as fuck of that place.

jesus the xen factory section in the original take only 10 minutes to finish, it was not the best part but was a quick go, but now on Black Mesa it can take almost 2 hours and that elevator section JESUS WHAT FUCK WAS THAT!!!

And review scores.

Funny how they lobotomized On A Rail only to create their own On A Rail in the end

cringe

Unironically soulless.
Some of the black mesa levels were improved, but Xen was just a pointlessly elongated slog.
I don't know if it was the game's atmosphere didn't translate as well to modern graphics, but none of the things I liked about HL translated over to Black Mesa whatsoever.

Is this World of Warcraft?

>OLD GOOD NEW BAD

In this context, yes.

the fucking shotgun model, why the fuck did they make it so fucking robust?

OLD BAD NEW GOOD
