Yeah it has very classic JRPG combat, and the story is like a laundry list of JRPG tropes too, when it came out (like 15 years ago) everyone said it was nostalgic, so that gives a sense of how "classic" it is in terms of living up to typical JRPG standards.
Anyway the combat system is kinda boring in FC but gets better in SC with improvements, then in 3rd is basically the same with only very minor changes.

There is combat. Battles can be slow if you don't gear up and equip your magic properly. Always initiate combat from behind. There's a quartz that will prevent enemies from approaching you. The story is very wordy and explains the structure of their society and daily. Many people find it slow, but it ultimately made me fall in love with the world since you come to understand it so well.

I have to agree on this. It's heavy as hell world building but the story is nothing special, not that its a bad thing till cold steel.

If you weren't already into the series years ago, don't bother. Most Trails fans only play the newer games because it's like a drug for them, only the drug is giving out less of the good feel than it had in the past and replacing it with utter despair.

Yas Forums gives it a lot of shit but I decided to try it anyway, I hate turn based games and the first game was a hard to get into but by the end of the first game I was really into it and have no regrets currently about to start cold steel 3. It's probably not for everyone but it's more than "generic anime tropes" and personally the grid based stuff makes the turn based combat fun along with being able to directly effect the turns people take idk I just feel like I have a lot of control despite the game being turn based and it gets better as the series progresses
