The plot doesn't get overly grandiose and overbearing for its own sake towards the end, it's a smaller scale story that only affects one city with its alchemy and magic. Plus, the cast members actually have personality and chemistry with each other, a step up from the "just okay" cast of VIII. Their Monstrum abilities are also real fucking fun to play around with. Shironeko and Hawk are funny as hell too; "Adol" plays off them in his interactions real nicely.

If you want to play the series your options are 1,2, napishtim, felghana, and origins. The 3D games only exist if you want more from there and are in denial about the series being over.

Celceta is real iffy, yeah. I think Seven is better than it, but both VIII and IX blast those games out of the water.
