Honestly, yes. That whole era was full of people unafraid to be genuine and express themselves through fiction. They weren't afraid of people calling them out for being "edgy," they just made what they wanted to make. This may be true, but Shadow is such a bad fucking posterboy to rally behind for this. Being sincere didn't make him good. He was creatively bankrupt as they come, edgy just for the sake of it. Created in a time where edgy deviantart tier doppelgangers were being thrown around all the time in fiction. More importantly, it just doesn't fit. Sonic and that level of edge never should have mixed. There was pushback against Shadow because people didn't accept being told to accept a cartoon hedgehog as a hard bad ass.

You clearly never actually played the game, as Shadow is one of the most sincerely developed characters in video games, his arc introduces as a straight up evil version of the hero, gradually reveals to the player that he was a victim of tragedy and being manipulated by others to fulfill their ambitions.

This is definitely a western misconception, as the jump from the genesis games is very natural in terms of the Japanese canon. Sonic was always edgier than Mario, and was always meant to be more than a basic story to fulfill gameplay. I mean, c'mon. He goes Super Saiyan in the second game, and 3&K is a straight up epic about Eggman building a doomsday weapon with the power of a lost civilization. SA1 is more or less a direct continuation of that story. Sonic got popular by being different. As series like Mario became sanitized, safer, and more corporate, Sonic became darker, grittier, and more experimental. This is the way Sonic is MEANT to be, not some self aware meme series that tries to do bing bing wahoo.
