Source 2 SDK will be released not soon.
Source 2 map editor will be released pretty soon though, so i'm waiting for Portal 2-tier custom maps.

By all means, Source 2 basically has everything HL2 base in there, just HL:A is missing the sound and model/texture assets. We just need an SDK and technically speaking you could probably recreate most of these mods 1:1 besides the code and then expand their capabilities.

i really don't get the hype with VR. it's a kinda cool gimmick but it's not like you can just add it to any design and it's suddenly better.

HL:A has some NonVR functionality as well. If modders figure out a way to make HL:A work on a KBM then that would apply to most mods as well.
source 2 has been out for years and has produced nothing. any modder that can make something actually good has for more avenues now to make something available for sale. they might as well make a game to sell than a total conversion mod.

Sadly mapping and workshop support wasn't released day one, I was hoping I could be playing ports of Half Life 2 maps in HL:A already.
But I'm really optimistic especially with VR support.
When it comes to VR development, every game needs to start from scratch.
You need to make the physics work, interactions work, hands, arms, movement.
You need to create these systems from the ground up immediately every time.
But since source 2 has all those systems already built, modders and indi developers can jump immediately into game and map development.
HL:A really is invaluable in a lot of different ways in that aspect.
Probably because the tools have been extraordinarily limited and used for fucking DOTA2 and making maps for CS:GO before back-porting them to Source. You can slap shit in there, you can even use the HL2 code underlying, but you can't really produce individual mods, just tweaked shit in DOTA.

If Source 2 is as close to Source 1 as the recent modding threads make it seem, then it seems like it will be really easy to create the mods 1:1. The only thing that might break is Physics-related stuff since it doesn't use havok anymore.

A PC that can run this game at 90+ fps can handle unloading a previous room especially with how aggressively the games locks you out of areas. We were doing this on consoles from 2005, there's no excuse.
