Depending on how much you can tolerate pixelshit, Horizon's Gate recently came out and has 34 classes and you can do primary/secondary class. Your appearance does slightly change depending on your class and you can change your classes anytime outside of battles.

IV is god tier, one of my favorite modern JRPG but I’m pretty sure it’s not from this gen. IV A was ok but mainly shit because of muh Navarre XD every atlas game needs le quirky cute mascot. The new DQ was boring to me I have the original on PS4 and the enhanced edition for switch and it’s too generic I got like halfway through and quit out of boredom
The only positive thing I can say about XB2 was I liked the story towards the end, I thought the ‘revelation’ of why the world exists and whatnot was decent. Otherwise the combat is horrendously bloated and I hate the art style and writing.
XB2 was trash don’t kid yourself. XV is like a 6 because of the visuals, sound design, and bro-trip but just ended up being a letdown because of the pisspoor story and downgrades. KH3 is like a 5, I don’t get why people hate it so much, it’s the same as KH1/2 except better graphics. I thought some of the worlds like Pirates of the Caribbean were fun too, but at the end of the day I’m never going to take the plot or world of a game where talking Disney chipmunks talk about souls and time travel seriously
Octopath literally has 0 soul. I was employing hyperbole when I said it was “one of the worst”, I mean its perfectly functional I guess. But it has absolutely 0 charm or individuality, it’s seriously one of the most forgettable and boring games I’ve ever played in my life. I pumped like 30 hours into it and can not for the life of me remember any of the scenarios, any of the characters, any of the towns, nothing comes to mind

The real issue with the genre is that it suffers from so many flaws inherent to it a far majority of the games that come out are just outright unenjoyable. Persona 5 was a boring piece of shit with terrible dungeon design and a combat system that's fundamentally broken and in higher difficulties relies primarily on trial and error for information gathering and grinding for fusion materials as the core of its gameplay. It's just mindless busywork that extends into the hours to reach an answer to the problem you solved in mere seconds, and fuck not even vanilla SMT is this bad about it. It's the perfect example of everything that's wrong with the genre.
I think the last JRPG I legitimately enjoyed was EOV or my last replay of Devil Survivor 2, the rest I've dropped not even ten hours in, and honestly I just find them all to be boring exercises in monotony with varying degrees of annoyance imbued in their core design and little to no actual thinking involved. And that'd be forgivable if the rest were any good, but jesus christ, it's pretty sad that I've come to enjoy literal porn games like Rance IX/X, Material Brave and Venus Blood: Lagoon more for the whole package of gameplay and story than pretty much any modern JRPG.
