So now that the franchise is ended, which of these games were actually good? I must admit that I've never payed past the 5th stratum in any game because I really only enjoy the game while it's hard. That being said, I think 3 and EO2U are my favs.

nope

1U, 2U, 3, 4, 5 and nexus are all varying levels of good.
I loved mapping in nexus, just needed more background variety.

3 has the best setting, classes and atmosphere. All the others are terribly dull.

The first three are ok. The later games have alright battle mechanics but the exploration is braindead
I'd play Wizardry or Elminage over it anyway.

SQ isn't done yet, faggot.

I got bored with both 5 and nexus after the 1st stratum. Which is the most hardcore?

the very first one if you go in completely blind

EOIII needs a remake so fucking bad if only to finish the story of EO2U

I am really excited for this.

The only cool thing about 3 that other games didn't have was the sailing. The classes that were good in 3 were the boring rehashed ones and the ones that were interesting like Wildling and Zodiac were just horrible.

Corona'd

The move to Switch is definitely forcing them to make more changes than usual. I'm curious whether they're just focusing on improving audio and visuals, or if they're trying to make something more expansive than before.

I will fucking kill you. The Wildling is one of the most fun and versatile classes in video game history.

>tfw Owl for randos
>tfw Lion for bosses
>tfw Tiger for everything

What's your point? They put out that teaser before the last game was even released to affirm that the series would continue without the DS.

>Zodiac
>Interesting
Literally an alchemist reskin with elemental counters.

2, 3, both Untolds and 5
I found 4 pretty boring

I mean. Yeah. It is Atlus after all.

B-b-but Switch EO is in production, right? R-right?

Aside from that, atmosphere is best in 1, 3 and 5 have best gameplay, 4 is shitty and bloated HP values force players to use certain class combinations, plus level locking skills was annoying as fuck (yes, Nexus had that too but it was less problematic).

Overall 3=5>1>Nexus>2>>>>>>>. Never played Untolds so no opinion here.

>take a year break from EO3, 6th stratum
>forget how to play my party

How the fuck is a franchise built specifically around the DS/3DS going to work on a single screen? It's either going to be really stripped down or incredibly tedious.

I assumed they were going to drop the map-making. I don't really know how it could be done without a stylus. They could still allow the player to add symbols, but I walls require more precision. They actually lost two things they needed at once: the second screen and the stylus.

All the skill trees in these fucking games make me feel like I'm leveling up every single skill I don't want to get the only one I actually planned to use.
My skills menu is a fucking mess in combat.

just make the map editor pop up if you press a shoulder button or tap the icon in the corner while navigating dungeons. you could have an option to autofill in tv mode and hand draw with the touchscreen in handheld

The button toggle is pretty obvious. I was saying you can't fill it accurately without a stylus.

It's a shame they didn't try an entry or spin off for the WiiU.

3's classes are horridfyingly dull by the most part, the fuck you're smoking
Gladiator and Arbalist are by far the dullest damage dealers in the entire series and ironically enough they are the strongest fucking classes here.

>cries about level locking in 4 when 5's dumbshit system straight locked you out of any interesting skills until halfway through the fucking game

Like I said, it was much better balanced.

Sure it was

5 locks skills until the start of the 3rd stratum
4 until you reach level 40, which is around the 4th stratum, and don't tell me that skill selection isn't dog ass shit till level 20 too.
So yeah, 4 was literally worse.

I was using non-shitty classes so I didn't notice any problems :)

Level 40 skills are less than 1/3 of your total skill set and you open level 20 skills very fast. In 5, you don't have any real build options for much longer. And that's on top of absolutely OUTRAGEOUS SP investment needed to cap most of the skills which makes character building even duller and slower.

They definitely wanted to stay on Nintendo's budget system so that they could keep the team as it was. It's possible they've had to hire a bunch of artists and programmers now.

>logical progression instead of arbitrary level gates that reward grinding
>complaining about a cornerstone and strength of EO's skill trees because it doesn't give you everything for free

I thought the Union shit in V was fucking stupid. Force was better.

>You open level 20 real fast
Lmao what the fuck are you smoking
4 has by far the slowest character building in the entire series, look at linksharks, look at nightseekers, look at dancers, hell even medics take forever before they can do their auto heal/revive shenaningans, while in 5 my fencer was already dodgetanking by the end of the first stratum

V shat the bed with almost every single mechanic it tried to introduce, honestly
The fact they removed overworld instead of simply copying 3's comfy exploration was fucking painful on top of it

I agree with both of you to an extent. I see that locking away skills helps balance the game, but having characters do none of the things for which you hired them is discouraging. I think a Nexus approach could be better for the master classes, where you can pick the master class quite early but there are still portions of your tree locked away by stratum. Would that be better?

I'm having trouble which things were brought in by V other than Union and master classes.
I like the idea of master classes, at least.

>but having characters do none of the things for which you hired them is discouraging
Botanist can't heal before masteries? Dragoon can't guard before masteries? Pugilist can't bind and shit out damage before masteries? This is news to me

I obviously meant more specific than those examples. If I want to have a defensive shaman, I can't cancel a single buff or debuff until master classes. Too much functionality is missing before master classes.

Fucking awful example, I just realized I'm wrong aboutbuffs.
Whatever, you're right, I'm retarded. Still thought waiting for master classes restricted things too much.

4 is still my favorite.

>because it doesn't give you everything for free
It's one thing when you have to specialize
It's another thing when your Harb is barely able to get the fucking miasma and auto miasma alone by the end of second stratum

The core functionality of both branches are always present within the base skills, allowing you to get a taste of what comes later and use the first two stratums to decide which would be best for your party. There is nothing missing, the masteries simply enhance and extend upon what it already there

I understand what you're saying, and when I played V I didn't use a harbinger, but if I did I thought I'd try to skip auto-miasma and max out endless shroud instead.
Even if my idea did work, 10 points for a pair of miasma skills just makes the class feel like shit.

Why do people like 3 so much? I mean it's my favorite too but it's weird to see a consensus on Yas Forums for once.

It seems like a consensus with everyone who's played all the mainline games. I don't know why either.

Meanwhile it's the only DS one without a remake. Even the devs know it's perfect.

it has the objectively best stratums in the franchise, except Stratum 3, it is hot garbage

lol no

What's wrong with stratum 3? The first floor is probably my favorite in the entire franchise, with the brachyosaurus, ant queen and that new battle theme.

Consensus is too strong, but 3 seems to be the usual favorite.

What are your favorite stratum music?

youtube.com/watch?v=4960wOjtCXY

Any excuse to continue getting this music into more and more games.

Probably this But 3 took my EO virginity so I'm biased. 4th stratum in 2 is really good also.

floors are too fucking big with the only feature being damage tiles. FOE are incredibly boring and uninteresting. Poison Lizards are fags

Everything but 1 desu, all others have something worth playing for. If you want to only play a one, then III if you can only emulate DS and 4 otherwise
