She was conditioned by Cerberus to orgasm every time she killed someone. If you talk to her, she tells you that, back in Pragia, they would fill her up with drugs, probably endorphins, every time she killed a kid she had been forced to fight. As for the selfish gain, she tells you that it merely evens up her odds for survival. "Ever ytime someone dies and it isn't me, my chances of survival go up" or something to that extent. Jack was simply never taught better.

The change already happens in ME2. Jack likes being part of the SM. Pick her to lead the Fire Team and it becomes pretty obvious. Not so much, if you ditch her, fuck her or generally dismiss her, but she goes through that progress. Not sure if her position in ME3 is warranted, but that goes more to show that Bioware needed her to be pre-occupied with something in ME3, so as to cut corners on her content, because it would be too much work, in too little time for content that not many would otherwise experience.
