The writing isn't as good as Marc Laidlaw's. The OST isn't as good as Kelly Bailey's. VR still has yet to completely figure out locomotion. But the game pushes the medium of videogames further than any other game Valve has released since the founding of the company.
Doesn't matter if you can't play it. In the future you'll be glad Valve made it.
You can shit on the writing but the music was better. Seriously, please play the game. The OST is top tier.
Hunter Collins
noooooooooooooooooooo i wanna click on heads and go fast aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
Robert Kelly
The OST is absolutely better than HL2, Ep1 and Ep2.
I'd say between Boneworks and Alyx there can be a VR game that does the best of both within a year or two. The problem with Alyx is its Half Life, mainstream and they have to do teleporting so people don't fail jumps or have to climb for obtuse puzzles like Boneworks
Henry Thompson
i just finished the game. The OST never struck me that much. it only hit me how much less i liked it once they used one of Kelly's tracks in the game and I started comparing them.
Don't get me wrong, i like it. I just like it a lot less.
Agree on everything especially the soundtracks. At this very moment I can remember many iconic half life music tracks. None are from Alyx. I dare anyone to refer to a memorable music piece from alyx that isn't taken from previous games.
Regarding writing, they wasted so much potential playing it safe. They could have added so much to the lore, or even just referenced it.
All this makes it seem like a medium pusher first story expander last.
>Doesn't matter if you can't play it. In the future you'll be glad Valve made it. Agreed 100%
Joshua Price
Yes the music was good!
Juan James
>Doesn't matter if you can't play it. In the future you'll be glad Valve made it. I wonder how many other developers are just going to straight up copy how it implemented everything in VR. Probably a lot. But other than that, holy shit, imagine the modding potential.
The whole Vault sequence is Valve's take on Laidlaw's leak.
Jonathan Campbell
So what will the HL:A/VR equivalent of counter strike be? Someone’s going to take this engine and make a multiplayer thing out of it, the question is what will work well in VR?
What are some of your favorite moments Yas Forums? One that really sticks out to me is the tripmine room. I remember crouching down to the floor and swinging the bay door over my head only to see several laser beams and explosive barrels. The music stinger coincided perfectly with my own reaction, groaning and dropping my head in despair.
The game's biggest problems are that you can't move while holding with both hands without dropping the item, and there are no melee attacks.
Aaron Rodriguez
When you’re stuck in the elevator with Jeff was one of the most intense gaming experiences of my life, best moment in the game for me.
Grayson Nguyen
>you can't move while holding with both hands without dropping the item ????? I played on Oculus but you could hold two things with both triggers and then move with the thumbstick no problem?
Jace Jenkins
How? Jeff's AI is terrible and has no depth to it. As long as you're quiet and a few feet away from him, he will never find you because there is next to no search routine.
Alexander Sanders
How did Alyx not know what the Advisors were in Episode 1 if she saw like 10 of them dead on a train 5 years earlier.
Brayden Baker
Also why don't the poison headcrabs kill barnicles? These zoomer devs don't know what they're doing.
Carter Lee
the guy in the distillery literally says this to you. that is the point.
Yeah you’re right but it was different when it’s dark as fuck and there’s a literal 6 foot tall high fidelity fucking beast (seemingly) right in front of your actual fucking person, it’s genuinely frightening having to go up and push the button, especially when you’re not sure exactly how it’s going to react (since it gets you if you’re too close regardless of if you’re covering your mouth or not).
Benjamin Reyes
>that is the point. So the point is for the player to never be in any real danger or under any pressure of Jeff finding him?
Nathaniel Diaz
Curious is this your first VR game or something.
Jack Howard
he says there is nothing to be afraid of. jeff's just an obstacle. the point is demonstrating how even something that shouldn't be threatening feels like it when there's a sense of presence. you're challenged to get over your irrational fear by realizing they're actually harmless. if you're an epic gamer who doesn't feel the fear, you just blow through onto the next chapter, congrats.
Dylan Watson
>if you're an epic gamer who doesn't feel the fear, you just blow through onto the next chapter, congrats. It was a missed opportunity to make something truly scary.
Carson Sanchez
No I’ve had VR since 2017 but I mostly stick with simracing so VR horror was pretty new besides some demos I did a long time ago. You’re right that from a gaming point of view Jeff is pretty easy to deal with but the atmosphere hit the right notes for me I guess to make it feel extremely intense.
Austin Wilson
FUUUUCK I wanna play it so bad. My index needs to get here already.
Ian Nelson
As someone who also has had VR since '17 I'm 100% with you. I've played the horror games too though, and I still think the atmosphere for Jeff was superb. As was the dark part of the sewers.
Jaxson Hall
>make the player feel smart for locking in Jeff >slowly reveal that they need to open it up again
Ludo.
Adrian Murphy
I knew the second i locked him up i had to let him out at some point sigh.... i wish i was like the normal kids.... it sucks having 4 billion IQ
Jackson Butler
Pavlov, lol
James Morris
I realized it too considering it's too early for him to fet locked up but the way they build tension is just excellent. I wouldn't mind seeing Valve actually doing a full length AAA horror game. Alyx takes more cues from Resident Evil than actual Half Life games.
Christopher Brooks
>It was a missed opportunity to make something truly scary. like?
>> I wish I could play the game but my INdex was designed by aliens and doesn't fit my head Seriously nothing feels comfy. It's the most annoying experience I've ever had. FUCK I HATE VR AND WASTED 1500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My glasses are destroyed and I need new ones. Fuck VR its a dead meme.
I'm only on the 4th chapter right now and am having a lot of fun but the writing can be really annoying sometimes.
I understand Russell is a comedic character to keep things light but some of the stuff Alyx has been saying just makes me groan. The game is a little too quippy for my likings and I don't think people should be cracking jokes back and forth with eachother while being in the middle of a pack of zombies trying to murder me
William Rivera
OG HL2 and it's episodes have awful story, what the fuck are you talking about? Alyx made no difference.
Jayden Martinez
they have exceptional writing though.
Parker Hall
>VR still has yet to completely figure out locomotion. this isn't true, its just valve is super autistic and ignored the last 4 years of progress
Jeremiah Ross
>VR still has yet to completely figure out locomotion. you have yet to figure out VR genelet
Cooper Robinson
Can't have that or a bunch of people will trip and break their headsets
Jason Anderson
>None are from Alyx.
Because you haven't given it time to marinate in your mind. Is your favorite music album something you listened to once or even twice? Quit being intentionally stupid.
Christopher Barnes
I adore that Valve let moments like that play out by themselves. That room was tense because I was trying to diffuse intersecting tripmines attached to physics objects. It didn't need Russel in my ear telling me to be careful, or Alyx commenting on it, or the soundtrack amping up to keep me on edge. They absolutely understand the difference between regular and VR setpieces. Also, another favorite one: OPEN THE DOOR, ALYX
Jack Turner
tranny's desktop
Ethan Ortiz
Part of it is that Alyx is 19 and doing her best to act like shit's not getting to her. It's just an extension of how she was in the originals, really. Kinda like a... zombine, right?
Benjamin Watson
gamers are just too autistic to accept teleport cause its different and doesn't look good on video. It's far more immersive than sliding around like you're on a hoverboard. When all your actual movements come from your physical movement, you get much more into the game. Valve ideas don't come from nowhere.
I nearly don't suffer motion sickness at all in any VR game, even demanding ones like Boneworks, but I prefer playing with teleport in alyx. Perhaps a very large playspace to walk around in does help though.
Dominic Bailey
>playing games for the story
Luis Stewart
My biggest problem with teleporting movement is how it makes it harder to spatially understand your environment. I find it harder to build a mental map of the environment when I'm seeing it in distinct slices I'm jumping between rather than one coherent space.
Mason Cooper
>It's far more immersive than sliding around like you're on a hoverboard. literally kys
Adam Perry
teleport breaks the game, zombies absolutely cannot hit you if you're zooming around and they're like half the enemies in the game Meanwhile playing with slow as fuck continuous makes you a lot more vulnerable. On hard this shit is almost reminiscent of actual survival horror.
