it doesn't but it looks like it does because the height in Doom is just a visual and doesn't translate into gameplay beyond creating movement barriers.

When you go in to map view that is basically what the game engine sees. Height doesn't matter. And when you fire a projectile at an enemy it draws a line between you and the enemy to account for the height difference visually and moving projectiles, like plasma or rockets, follow that path.

You look at it in the context of when it was released. It's a great game in that sense. The people saying that it is better than the newer DOOM games are definitely blinded by nostalgia. Sure, the new DOOM games don't have as much of an impact on the genre that the original had, but they are, in almost every single metric, better games.

The moment I saw them do effortless 180s through the official demos was when I realized the ideal way to play.

UV pistol start is a whole new experience and every map supports it, it’s crazy.

When I’m comparing classic to new Doom stuff, I’m more comparing it to what can and has been done through modding and the community. It’s part of the reason why I think the newer Dooms have some huge fucking boots to fill.
Doom 16 was fun but still shy of what I wanted from a Doom sequel. Eternal looks cool but I still want to wait until it goes down, no modding support and the story seems gross.

In order to understand why DOOM is the way it is, you have to understand where it comes from. Before DOOM, id Software made The Catacomb, which was a top-down shooter in the vein of Gauntlet. Then they made Catacomb 3D, which was literally almost the exact same game but in first person. Then they replaced the magic fireballs with multiple selectable firearms and made Wolf3D. Then they added variable floor heights and non-orthogonal walls and made Doom. At this point the FPS as we know it didn't exist. In an FPS the main element is careful aiming, whereas Doom is about dodging projectiles and making smart use of the level, as well as going through the typical id games level structure (explore the level, find colored keys, get to the exit)
Doom is an evolution of arcade top-down shooters (the beta even had score items and a lives system), not "Quake/Halo/HL but older and more limited". If you look at it from this perspective it makes sense why you don't aim vertically, why you don't jump, and also why it took them until doom to figure out it would be useful to have direct keys for strafing left and right (in Catacomb3D and wolf 3D you have to hold down a separate strafe key in order to strafe, because this is how you strafe in the original Catacomb since it was a top-down game). It's all just stuff that wasn't in the equation yet because the genre didn't exist.

Makes the game move at a faster pace, wish another game would try it. Fuck lock on, have it soft lock when you aim specifically at them and focus on letting the player tear ass around the map dodging projectiles.

To add to this, here's a fun thing I realized recently. Did you know Quake was also has vertical autoaim by default? Since it also has no mouselook by default, you can totally play it like Doom instead of being weirded out and immediately turning on mouselook and crosshair and turning off autoaim via commandline and playing it like a normal shooter. I've been going through it that way and I'm finding it a lot more fun (now it feels like an enhanced doom rather than just an old FPS). Since the game has more verticality in the levels, I've still found it useful to have the mouselook key handy (I bind it to the right mouse button) but only to take a look in some situations.
