It's doable as you said, and if XC1DE wasn't around the corner, I would say user could start with XC2 if he never intended to play XC1. But with DE coming out, it's best to play it first, then XC2. A lot of scenes and clues makes you go "wait, the 2 in XC2 maybe is a real 2", but you're never really sure. you're left with doubts, and you try to go to the bottom of it. And then, when the latest chapter happens, you truly understand the meaning of Kino. Even moreso if you played previous Xenogames.
So, I'll say it, one should play XC1DE before XC2.
