In fact, the black boxes on planes that have crashed is the only equivalent of this actually happening in reality. Nobody sits down to pen something immediately before their approaching death by monster or accident.
The whole idea is really absurd, and therefore a contrived way to give the player information or create "spooky environmental storytelling".
