Yes I notice a pattern with a lot of japanese things, for such an artistic place they're super traditional, so a lot of their thought patterns are extremely rigid. Genres typically centred on a japanese audience seem to barely change, VNs for instance haven't really advanced whatsoever (I get that there's not much you can do with them but still)
or JRPGs which seem to cling to ancient mechanics, pokemon, Final fantasy etc

They absolutely have regressed, however. VNs used to incorporate adventure-style gameplay in which you would go around, collecting items and choosing who to talk to.
Now they won't even bother with that, some exceptions excluded, the only interactivity you will experience is choosing options during/ after
dialogues or monologues.
I do admit that some games were often confusing, Divi-Dead is the perfect example as to this system not working smoothly, since you spent most of your time navigating the school for an encounter.

Exactly, this is just postulating and I am a bum with 0 expertise on this topic, but it seems to go wrong when there's no good outside influence, for instance, I think most people would agree anime was largely better when western traditional animation was still a thing. Now we're stuck with Bojack and Family guy because adults are strictly not allowed to watch cartoons, but it means anime is stuck drawing inspiration from other anime.
Also that's why I think Dark souls is so good, it seems to actually take inspiration from western games, but doesn't lose the strong points of japanese design, possibly japanese people feel differently than me, but I dont know any
