This sounds fucking dumb. Better than timetravel though I guess.
dude spoilers
don't care for the theory but at least having it as the OP lets me discuss the game without OHNONO shitposting
Almost anything is better than straight up "lol Gman went back to when Alyx was a kid and erased her memories"
This and the first datamining threads were the only ones i've seen on Yas Forums that weren't just spam wars

Another shill thread
Gonna fucking jinx it.
What the fuck was Wolpaw smoking when he wrote this shit?
>if hla was a test by the gman, is Eli actually still dead?
No, he's alive as per the end credits scene.
>if it was, but Eli was saved, does the gman have time travel powers?
He's always had control over time. Remember when he put Gordon into stasis for 20+ years or when he stopped time to save him from the explosion?
>This makes you wonder why he doesn’t go back in time to stop the vorts from interfering.
He's not a timelord trying to control everything with his magical sundial. He's just nudging things in the right direction.
>if hla was just a simulation INCLUDING saving Eli to trick Alyx into thinking gman saved her dad, when and how did gman stasis Alyx at the end of ep 2?
In between the end of EP2 and when Gordon wakes up at the end of HLA.
How he did it is presumably the same way he did it to Gordon.
>if it was all a test to prove alyx’s worth, why did the gman decide to test 19 year old alyx in a faux city 17? Seems like an of choice.
Young kids are more loving torward their parents and that means she was more likely to save Eli and get hired.
Anyone else also thinks that Alyx should’ve been a stand-alone game Like Opposing force and connecting it to Hl2ep 2 made a huge cluster fuck.
Nah they needed to move the main story along, even a little bit.
maybe, but I'm fine with it if they deliver on the ending within a few years
>strider wakes up
>this starts playing
youtu.be
fucking kino, i was so happy to find out mike morasky was doing the music, it's so half life but has his flare on it.
the story is basically
>eli gets very important secret combine info
>eli gets kidnapped by combine for stealing info
>alyx goes to save eli from being tortured
>alyx meets vort friend
>vort friend tells alyx to save other vort friends
>vort friend saves eli
>eli says info mentions a vault
>alyx finds the vault
>alyx breaks first set of wires and frees a vort friend
>freed vort friend frees other vort friends
>eli decrypts more info and says vault contains a weapon
>alyx wants combine weapon for the resistance
>eli decrypts more info and says the thing in the vault was discovered not made
>alyx wants discovered weapon for the resistance
>eli decrypts more info and says the vault is actually a prison
>alyx overhears mossman(?) and thinks gordon is in the vault
>alyx wants to free gordon from prison
>vort friends finish taking down wires around prison
>back up generator on prison
>alyx destroys back up generator
>alyx goes inside prison
>eli discovers its g-man inside
>alyx can't leave she's already being pulled up
>alyx frees g-man
>alyx saves eli
>alyx goes into stasis
That’s retarded and shows you’re not thinking it through. If gman really can’t do anything against vorts (unlikely) then he would just go back in time and prevent Gordon from killing the nihilanth. Boom, no more vorts to deal with.
Giving gman any sort of time travel power (not manipulation or stasis) ruins too much shit.
it was fucking surreal seeing the metrocops at the start desu, idk if they used mocap but the character animations were so fucking good, they looked real, like some larpers in cosplay running around IRL
a series of twists that don't change what's actually being done. you're just going to open the big thing in the sky
@neilk225 I think instead that Gman went back in time and changed the story of the whole thing. He used Eli's death as an opportunity to persuade Alyx, so that the younger version of her could make a deal with him. You know, the Vault is not mentioned in any lore of the game or by any member of the resistance, so it's totally a new thing.
What was up with the Combine saying "Hey, Alyx"
were they disguising their voices to try and lure her out?
>@neilk225
???
Copied this theory from a discord where a guy was answering another one
Did anyone else think russel was a bit... suspect? He seemed kind of distant a lot of the time, does he just have autism or is it something more?
They say "hey, alyx! hey alyx it's me russ! come out!" and try to do a kiwi accent.
Basically, yeah.
Wolpaw character characterization
About the level of thought I'd expect from a discord server.
I fucking loved that moment.
Wish they had incorporated it more.
Would have been really cool if there were guys who could fake the voice really effectively and maybe actually trick the player.
He felt like a last minute addition to the game, honestly. His character has no depth and is easily the worst Valve character.
Imo waiting 13 for a cliffhanger and old have it turn into “lol that didn’t happen, btw I took your waifu” just left a bad taste in my mouth. But then again it’s been so long since the last game I feel like it would’ve been a disappointment anyway. Even with Epistle 3. It didn’t feel like finding a treasure you spend your whole life looking for, but instead of finding working Super Nintendo when you clean out your uncles house after he died.
combat is too easy. the puzzles are what rack up the play time.
I get why they didn't kill him or anything, it would have been to obvious, but in the end he really was just a voice in your head. I hope they've got plans for him in the future since we know he's not dead.
I personally believe the events of Alyx are unique, Eli getting caught to the arrival of the vault never happened in the original timeline and are the result of the G-Man "nudging" events for his employers.
It is one of the few explainable reason on why a GMAN in the past predicting the future would still continue to hire Gordon Freeman after what happens and what he knows in HLA.
If he is omniscient and can see the future, why would he still keep hiring Gordon if he knows that he will betray him?
That's just stupid.
Pocket universe theory is good too, tho.
>Russel mentions that a strong enough grip could easily crush the gravity gloves
>aha, foreshadowing
>nothing happens to the gravity gloves
I don't think G-Man is omniscient or that he can necessarily see the full future.
He might be doing some insider trading from time to time when it comes to who to back and whatnot, but I don't think he can go Dr Strange mode and see all the possible futures.
The Vortessence disrupts the G-Man's abilities. He has no idea why Gordon isn't working out. He says so himself. He says he is unable or unwilling. G-Man is in the dark and all he knows is that he needs to be replaced. The Vorts save you from stasis/another assignment at the beginning of Ep 1 and by Ep 2, all the G-Man asks of you is to make sure Alyx makes it to White Forest so that the bargain can be made.
>he’s always had control over time
Putting people in stasis or pausing time is very very different to actual time travel.
>he’s nudging things in the right direction
Right, but his whole dumping Gordon for alyx was over the vorts interfering with gordon. If he could travel through time to save Eli to get access to alyx as an employee, why not just go back in time to stop the vorts from fucking with Gordon in the first place. Not to mention, his surprise reaction to the vorts in ep 2 contradicts any ability to travel through time or see the future.
> In between the end of EP2 and when Gordon wakes up at the end of HLA.
That works fine but relies on gman actually traveling through time and saving Eli, which causes the issues I brought up before.
> Young kids are more loving torward their parents and that means she was more likely to save Eli and get hired.
this is just convoluted and silly. 19 year old alyx is not dramatically different from 24 year old alyx.
The Gman has the same powers as the nihilanth. Why does nobody bring this up? If you listen to HL1's nihilanth voice, he even stutters and pauses like gman.
someone decode the vort mural. does it list any events we don't know about from alyx or previous games?
I gotta say, this is a fucking stupid ass theory.
BUT.
The ending with gman, like wtf gman wasn't fucking captured by combine, that sounds fucking stupid. That is the only reason that I support this.
Both Barney and Shepard are depicted
>Putting people in stasis or pausing time is very very different to actual time travel.
I don't see how. Why do you assume that the abilities are mutually exclusive?
>If he could travel through time to save Eli to get access to alyx as an employee, why not just go back in time to stop the vorts from fucking with Gordon in the first place.
His employers probably didn't authorize it.
Remember, he has to get permission to make a nudge.
>this is just convoluted and silly. 19 year old alyx is not dramatically different from 24 year old alyx.
Yeah I forgot that younger kids being more affectionate to their parents and more gullible is convoluted as fuck.
DONT FUCKING CLICK ON THE THREAD THEN YOU FUCKING COCKSUCKER
It's your responsibility to not get spoiled, eat shit.
shepard? he's never been mentioned in any valve game before, right?
But again, why would Gman hire someone if he knew they would be uncooperative later on, even if he doesn’t know the reason why because of the vortigaunts, why would he risk it and hire Gordon?
I see that.
Btw, they may have retconned the ending, but they connected pretty whole to the existing plot points
>intentionally posting spoilers
JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES BRO
G-Man doesn't know that Gordon is being uncooperative, and Gordon ISN'T being uncooperative. G-Man's influence was severed and he's unable to see why. Up until that point Gordon does work and he ends up being necessary to bring Alyx to White Forest.
I don't think the gman can see the future, only the past and present. The gman at the end of HLA is from after episode 2
Gman has his plans and goals from the beginning of Half Life 1
Sees potential in Alyx, saves her from Black Mesa in face of objections
Puts Gordon into stasis (at this point Gordon is presumably his main investment)
Takes Gordon out of stasis to kill Breen and destroy the citadel.
Puts Gordon back into stasis to use at a later stage
Vortigaunts interfere, Gman now doesn't have direct control over Gordon anymore
Gman changes his plans. Now Alyx is his main investment since Gordon is now 'Unwilling or Unable to perform the tasks laid down before him'
He needs Alyx to see her father die, so he can use that future as motivation for Alyx to be hired.
Asks Gordon to safely escort her to white forest so she can witness Eli's death.
Then gman goes back in time and lets himself be captured by the combine on earth, so that the events of Half Life Alyx can take place.
Alyx saves her father in the future, and is then hired by the Gman
Now the future (Gordon's present) has been changed, and the past (Alyx's present) has been changed.
Eli lives, and Alyx is in stasis. Hence why she disappears from Gordon and Eli's perspective.
Half Life 3 confirmed.
The key thing to note here is that timetravel is not so linear in this story. Changing the past doesn't directly effect the events of the future.
Rather, changing the past could be seen as creating two seperate timelines. One timeline exists where the past was not changed, and the other timeline
exists where it was. But it seems that putting someone into stasis, is an event that effects all timelines at once.
I love Alyx
This isn't reddit, you fag.
>Going to Yas Forums when wanting to avoid spoilers
Ask Marc Laidlaw when he apparently wrote Epistle 3.
>Asks Gordon to safely escort her to white forest so she can witness Eli's death.
that actually works fairly well and explains why the time travel is necessary
They are not in the previous games so I think that's the "foreshadowing"
>dark cave has an invisible wall if you try to go through it without a flashlight
>other invisible walls like the area behind russell's desk where he stands and the walkway on the other side of the two cranes with wood you can lift
>combine weapons disappear when they die
>your ability to jump to areas is not dependent on distance, its dependent on what areas devs decide to let you jump to.
>no fall damage scale, its either die or no damage. and the height at which you die isn't based on height, its based on what areas devs make fallable.
>jumping is teleporting
>no sprint
>no melee
Thank you for the new reaction image.
Reminder to all theorycrafters ITT that Eli also made a deal with G-Man and we can assume he traded something for Alyx safety during the Black Mesa incident.
forgot one:
>flashlight isn't light sensitive, it just turns on and off when the devs script it in to specific sections. there are even areas where its on where it was off earlier
Are you a brainlet?
>Russ makes the gravity gloves
>They are powerful enough to lift objects and throw them softly
>Alyx is given the gloves
>HL2 starts up
>Russ at some point has died, he/someone else upgrades the gloves to a gun, with the power to throw things with force
>gloves are ditched in favor of the gun
Thats the canon.
>B-but muh gloves are bettter
Yes it makes no sense, as the gun is a massive clunky thing that wouldn't just replace the gloves, but they didn't have the gloves in mind 13 years ago you have to give them slack, they can't retroactively change the entire hl2 game.
Time manipulation just means gman can keep people in stasis without aging or talk to someone by pausing time. Time travel implies gman would know everything that will happen so he should never be surprised (like with the vorts) or change his mind (like he did with alyx over Gordon). Also, if something doesn’t go his way, the gman can just go back in time to fix it. This creates too many problems.
>his employers didn’t authorize it
Again, this is convoluted. Gmans employees want Gordon’s services, they are pissed the vorts are fucking that up, why would they not fix it if they could?
> Yeah I forgot that younger kids being more affectionate to their parents and more gullible is convoluted as fuck
19 years old is not a young kid, especially when comparing them to their 24 year old self. It’s not a giant leap of maturity. And it’s not just the age thing either, setting up a shitty knockoff city 17 to test alyx is dumb.
The jump button is basically the sprint.
In the end, eli doesnt die and gets saved by alyx who changed the ending of episode 2. Because time works in a way where you can see it all and try to change destiny, even the vortigaunts know eli is going to die. But the gman offers a deal to alyx and makes it so that eli gets saved in the future, because he knows he needs a new pawn as he knows that in the future vortigaunts will cuck him from using gordon.
the jump button is basically the teleport*
Hello target one.
I hate this shit so much, especially since there are tons of dark places where your flashlight will not turn on. Zero reason to not make it manual, especially since it doesn't need a keybind, just fucking push the flashlight with your finger.
