Few but very well fleshed out units.
Very good and timeless art direction that is neither overly gritty or cartoonish.
Pathing and control limitations that gives huge room for micromanagement and player skill to impact the game. A good player will wreck your oversized army with half as many units from micro alone, and it stops you from bulldozing the enemy after one lost fight. I think this is the most important.
And there's very very strong units that will absolutely destroy unless directly countered, which gives much room for build deviations and come-back potential.
All these mini games of strategy like keeping vessels and observers alive against zerg adds a ton of depth and complexity to the game.

They remastered it a few years ago, so it works and looks great even on modern monitors. The original version is free, but does not include matchmaking. Reasonably active community too, even though you'll get wrecked a lot.

I disagree, I think DoW gets boring pretty quickly once you figure out what's busted and what isn't.
