As far as models go, as much as I hate to say this, XV probably had closest to best. Mainly because faces in XV were more realistic than in remake. They still looked anime, but more on realistic side. Remake has very anime looking models (very KH) in realistic graphics and light. It just looks weird.
You either go full anime, or full realism, or close to both. Remake just doesn't have balance. Faces are anime and uncanny, but everything else is realistic.

Cloud and Aeris look fine. Barret has dumb sunglasses, but he also look alright.
It's Tifa and Sephiroth that look extremely weird. They have gigantic bug eyes which are just distracting. Their jawlines are weird. Their heads look squashed and their lips also aren't wide enough, so when they talk they look as pucker fish (especially Tifa). Reducing their eye size, giving them sharper jawline and making lips slightly bigger would improve everything a lot.
