For me, it's using real PS2 hardware with a backup loader. Emulation is just too inaccurate, especially the the console's best games like Silent Hill 2 and Ace Combat 4.

What's that loader? I'm on my second PATA HDD and they're not as easy to come by these days

can't you just run a regular SATA HDD with PATA to SATA adatper?

Probably, but it might not all fit inside the case. I have seen third-party network/HDD adapters that are SATA, but I have no experience with them

I have one of those from China and it works fine with a 2.5 Sata drive.
