Alright, I've gone entirely cold turkey on the internet as a whole until I beat Half Life: Alyx.
I beat it maybe, 10 minutes agp.

I liked the ending, and that whole ending sequence was really impressive. I do wonder how the fuck this can work with the time paradox of it all. Like, Alyx frees the g-man 5 years before half life 2, saves eli, and then becomes imprisoned. But if she's imprisoned then how did she get out to save Gordon at the beginning of 2?

The real question I have is if they'll do Half-Life 3 in VR or 2D, since the ending all but confirms HL3. I loved Alyx, but I think the concessions of VR make for a completely different game. I think I'd like Half-Life 3 in 2D, but I want Valve to continue to make HL:A quality VR titles.

I imagine that HL will be their VR testbed. If Valve still does singleplayer flat games it will most likely be Portal since Portal in VR would cause someone to go to the ER

Gman can make pocket dimensions, we know because he's made 2 (3 if you count adrian).
At the end of Episode 2, Gman probably did that fucking time stop thing he did at the end of Half-Life 2 (when you and alyx were supposed to die), but this time to Alyx, as he mentioned she was "worth far more then the initial appraisal", in her guilt ridden state she most likely made a deal with G-Man to bring back her father, however he probably needed to know if she was going to be loyal enough and not give up on him.
As such, he creates a pocket dimension where she remembers nothing and her dad and russel are different, just to see how far she'd go to "rescue" G-Man from his statis to see if she was hireable.
As a result of her being good enough to hire, he saves her dad but at the price of now working for him unlike Gordon.
Things that don't make sense if this IS time travel:
>The entirety of the vault
>The Citadel is now 20x more wide and has a fuckton more moving parts
>We never see alien combine ever again
>We never see Xen infestations again (even in places that would have been taken over by xen long ago)
>we never see the combine SMG
>We hear a new overwatch lady
>We never hear about Eli being captured TWICE
>We never hear about Russel ever again
>Alyx NEVER mentions advisors despite seeing them up close
>Alyx NEVER mentions the Gman again, despite knowing your allowed to discuss him (eli and gordon)
>The combine SMG doesn't exist
>The white combine never exist
>Shield combine don't exist
>We never see armor headcrabs ever again (these fuckers would be insanely useful in combine headcrab pods)
>We never hear about Alyx's actions in Half-Life 2 (she'd be a KNOWN person and would be hunted down 24/7 like gordon)

I just finished it half an hour ago too. Played about 7 hours yesterday and 6 hours today. Yesterday I thought it was pretty mediocre for a VR game. Today just elevated it to the top of my list of all games. The game just picks up right at the midway point and the Jeff level is probably the most amazing experience ever.

OKAY here's what I got out of the ending user
The events of HL2 and the episodes happen after half life alyx. When younger vance was always destined to save her father. But he wipes her memories.
When EP2 happens. Instead of Eli dying, the advisor dies and Alyx is then stored in a pocket dimension like Gordon was.
The Vortigaunts were working to save Gordon from the Gman, however they couldn't save Alyx Vance. They all know the past and the future and see it as it is now. They don't have the same concept of time as we do.
The wise vortigaunt tells you this in HL2. That they still see Gordon in the Nihilanth's chamber and that all vortigaunts are in a way. A hive mind.
Now how this makes sense? This is inter dimensional time none-sensetive 500Dchess where the Vorts and the Gman and his employers and maybe even the combine are playing to put all the right pieces at the right places at the right time to win. All the factions are racing for control over the variables. The humans who's wills and powers are such that they can change fate.

I'm happy enough with it. The hand off back to Gordon was nice, and hopefully we'll actually get continued adventures this time. The wear and tear on the HEV suit was a detail that really added to it; the implication that for all he has accomplished Gordon is still only human and is battered and bruised by the gruelling task he's been given. Yet, he picks up and puts on his glasses, and takes the crowbar once more.

You are being dense here, but HL2 ends with the three of them in that structure and Eli is supposed to die. When alyx saves his father Gman takes her, Alyx from HL2 dissapears but Eli is saved, you are still the same Gordon and they give you the crowbar. So yes, you are gonna play from HL2 but not LITERALLY HL2 because of that time bullshit, but still its HL2.
