Happened to me a few months back. He said he was going to be working overtime during the holidays and literally vanished. His dad had died a few months prior and then another relative passed away. Haven’t seen him online since then but I hope he’s alright.

Not steam, but i used to play Tekken Tag 2 with my godbrother. He lost the use of his legs and was hospitalized for 2 years until an infection. I never deleted his PSN out of respect.
It's been 4 years.

This is why "online friends" are a meme. It's utterly pointless. I have wasted far too much time and far too many years on people that I will never speak to again. It's all meaningless now, all that time. Online friendship means nothing because it's infinitely easier to cut ties and and emotionally sever the bond with said friend than it would ever be with an actual physical person. So why even bother?
