It's fine if it suits the setting and you aren't meant to relate the measurements to anything in real life. For example in world of warcraft, it's just a distance measurement relative to itself.
When you are meant to relate it to something in real life, however, it really sucks.
I HATE how shitty the European release of Pokemon always has been. The units are nonsense to Europeans, while people in the rest of the world including Germany get measurements that actually give an idea of how big the pokemon are. I really missed out because of this lazyness.

I'm american and in science classes from middle school onward, metric has been used exclusively.
Apart from a single page in my school planner, I can't think of a single time I've seen imperial conversions in school. Most Americans have no idea how many square feet are in an acre, or that hectares are related to area at all. Most Americans don't even know how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon, or how many cups are in a gallon. Most Americans don't know what rods or furlongs are. And every american knows 1000 meters are in a kilometer.
We tell our temperature in fahrenheit and use distances in miles but most everything academic already uses metric exclusively. We're much closer to the way Canada and the UK use imperial than most foreigners realize.
