Only downgrade I've seen is the zombie mechanics. Everything else is subject to personal opinions.

The RE games worked best in terms of horror when the playable characters were relatively inexperienced. That's why RE2 worked, and even with RE1, Chris and Jill were glorified SWAT going up against these BOWs for the first time ever.
