I don't know if with x-ray you get those sharp textures and nice skyboxes, but is a nice engine anyway
After Clear sky I wasn't sure that even old GSC fully understood their game, what made it special. Call of pripyat was a return to form; even though the bigger areas were worse then the small areas: you either go full open world or you don't, CoP areas weren't big enough, place of interest were too close to each other and it started to feel themepark-ish. Does new GSC understand it? (Also I thought they did sell the rights to someone else, how come it is still GCS?)
Anyway I'm hoping for the best, the death of this ip is a tragedy for the medium.

I always felt CoP boring. You can get top tier guns and armour 30 min in game and there's no actual sense of progress in experience. Also, the side missions are way too linear and they make up 90% of the game. There's only 2 maps (Pripyat doesn't count, nothing interesting happens in free play) with nothing to do but walk from point A to point B. And the gunplay sucks, it wasn't ad intense as SOC.
CS had it's share of shit but it felt more consistent than CoP.

I agree with everything you said except this. CS was all over the place but much more fun as a result. CoP was pretty flat and overly consistent, all the charming jank buffed out.
Yep, I remember playing ShoC with no fixes or mods but I couldn't let it go. It felt like a different game genre completely.

And yeah it was all over the place alright. The gang wars, I liked them, it made the zone feel more alive as broken as they were, and made more sense for a faction system.
Another thing, I loved how, for example, in CS Freedomers can work up things like sniper rifles and light suits while Dutyers worked on heavy guns and armour. Those defining traits were lost in CoP (Also the radio music! And Ashot, the Freedom trader! The conversations in the PA at the freedom base...)
You're probably right on those aspects, I don't remember well at this point. I certainly preferred the original SoC. But the faction war thing in Clear Sky was, to me, really out of place. It butchered the game atomsphere (and it wasn't really well made, with that shitty interface). IIRC Clear Sky also removed several subterreans areas: basically one of the most thrilling parts of the original, gutted. It really felt like they didn't know very well what to do with Stalker.

CoP showed this big time. The biggest pain in SoC was ferrying around loot from the Garbage to the Cordon w/o energy drinks.
Remember the booby trap scene in CS? Great! Now you've lost your loot, guns and anal virginity to a pegging bandit!

I played it with the Sky Project fix and if you just follow the story is OK. Not good, not terrible. But the gunplay is a bitch. I remember doing all the gang wars for Freedom for that sweet ExoSuit but you still get peppered in three 9mm shots. Also, there's no sidequests like in ShoC to get easy cash and bodies rarely drop bandages or medkits, which sucks major dick when you need like three of those to stop the bleeding from a 2ft fall.
And yeah, the only underground section is the flood the lab scene in Agropom.
The linear levels were perfect, but the open levels apart from the first one were poor, I had to drop the desert level for a few weeks

I never really got into Metro as I did with STALKER. Fisherman's polka is still a banger tho.

2033 is pretty good but has zero replayability unlike STALKER

Skadovsk is boring as painting a house with your own shit. Get order, walk from swamp to hill to swamp, grab thing, go back. Earning money in CoP is absurdly easy, but why upgrade when even your unmodified AK does the same damage as an FN2000? It all felt so spoonfed....
Level wise I think it's not, but they dropped the ball with the gameplay and the braindead AI
as much as I had fun with Xenus as a kid, I tried to replay it somewhere mid 10's... didn't last more than a couple of hours
In stalker the scale must be realistic. Open world should be Day-Z level of huge, with vehicles of course and other in-game means of fast travel (like morrowind silt striders). Otherwise smaller areas like SoC are just better.

The level scaling in ShoC is amazing. As in, the vehicle graveyard in Garbage? Miss it if you didn't help Bes. The Loner base in the Dark Valley? Miss it if you don't take a hit mission from Barkeep. The assault on the military post in the cordon? Sidorovich's sidequest! Most of what you see or do in the game are by products of side quests!
